Most beers of similar amber/red color will have a similar malt flavor component.

The different between amber lagers and amber ales is that due to the different yeasts - amber lagers will be a bit "smoother" and "one-note" in nature.

Hop flavor will vary and depend on the beer. But typically amber ales have more of dominant hop flavor than amber lagers.

Cheboygan Lighthouse Amber. It's an Altbier but solid at that.

Alaskan Amber and Stone Levitation are both great.

Troegs Hopback Amber or (I'm guessing a Vienna Lager will count) Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. And of course Yuengling is a go to when I'm low on cash

While not a world class beer by any stretch, i have always enjoyed Leinie's Red Lager.

It's pretty funny how many people are naming ales when the thread title clearly says lager. I haven't tried a lot of beers in the style but I had Riverwest Stein Beer from Lakefront Brewing a couple weeks ago and thought it was very good.

Looks like I have only had three beers in this style, despite 1220 ratings. This tells me I ought to try more since the ones I have had I didn't rate very highly.

Amber LAGER.... Amber LAGER.... Amber LAGER.... Amber LAGER.

Anyway, my votes for best Amber LAGER's are GL Eliot Ness, Yuengling, Brooklyn Lager, and Blue Point Toasted Lager in descending order.

Magic Hat's Vinyl, an excellent full flavored beer, but not sure if it is still made. I look for it and never find it. This is the thing I don't like about the modern scene, sometimes something really good comes along, e.g. it's much better than No. 9, IMO, and before you know it it's gone. Novelty tends to predominate and the website is way too flashy for me, I couldn't spend more than a few seconds there. Right now I like that Red IPA from Sierra Nevada, a seasonal but it's come back the last few years. Pretty much the perfect red ale IMO.
