I recently purchased a 6-pack of Straub American Lager for summertime drinking (i.e., lawnmower beer). It is a very well made beer but just a tad too sweet for my palate.

The Straub 1872 is a tasty Pre-Prohibition Lager. I still have a couple bottles left from my purchase of the Straub Summer Variety pack I bought in June.

Plus, it the only brewery of the big three who wasn't a commie turncoat and stayed 'Murican.

Coors merged with Molson in 2005 - so, at best a "North 'Murican" based multinational company.

 

Old Style and High Life will always have prime real estate in my beer fridge.
And we just got Hamm's in 30 packs for $11.99 at the Jewel! Had maybe one a long time ago, never purchased, and I must say it's pretty darn good. Sky blue waters indeed.

 

Carton makes an Agave AAL called Canyon that is super tasty! Too bad it's still draft only, and mostly available at the brewery...

Still, Banquet is brewed a few miles from my house

Did not know that, though it seems that it is jointly owned Cana-di-an and Murican, while Bud n friends have zero Murican ownership. Oh well, they still brew the Dankquet a few miles from my house and it is far and away the best AAL in the US.

How does Yuengling differentiate the bottles and cans brewed and packaged at the original brewery and their new "Mill Creek" brewery on the outskirts of Pottsville? I imagine there's a different letter in their date code that represents their 3 different breweries but have never studied the Yuengling coding (besides looking - in vain - for some fresh Lord Chesterfield Ale cans).

 

PBR would be my choice....or Lone Star, but it really tears up my stomach.

PBR and Rolling Rock

 

I'd have to go with PBR. That and Rolling Rock, the only American Adjunct Lagers that don't seem to make me regret it the next day.

PBR is too trendy for me. I can’t touch it since I saw a table full of wanna-be hipsters drinking tall boy cans at a reasonably swanky restaurant.

If Yuengling counts, then Yuengling. If not, then Miller High Life for sho.

 

It's from 2013. The model is Cory Rist. As a side note, she was one of the more famous people hooking up with Tiger Woods 5 or 6 years ago.

 

What are they then? It's pretty clear that both Straub Beer (now called "American Lager") and Lionshead are traditional US adjunct lagers, and in the case of Yuengling, their former flagship, Yuengling Premium, is as well.

Yuengling Traditional Lager was created in the late 1980s, clearly influenced by the success of some craft beers, and is usually considered an American amber beer.

 

If Yuengling counts, definitely that. If not, lions head or Miller

I think that pilsner or American pale lager is more accurate.

To me, AAL = mass produced by big brewing conglomerates.

Straub, Lion and Yuengling are much closer to micro-breweries than macro-breweries.

 

On this site, "American Pale Lagers" are, by definition, all-malt and those three beers are traditional US-type lagers that use corn or rice as an adjunct (a third or more of the grain bill).

Nor are they hopped at a level that would fit either definition of "Pilsener" (Czech or German) on this site.

That's sort of true as far as the size of their brewing facilitates go - although Yuengling runs two breweries with capacities over 1 million bbl/yr - not particularly close to the Brewers Assoc. "microbrewery" definition limit of "under 15,000 bbl." Their Florida brewery was previously operated by the decidedly "macro" brewing companies Schlitz, Stroh and Pabst. And even The Lion's capacity of 300-500k puts it well beyond a "microbrewery".

But the term "American Adjunct Lager" in no way implies the size of the brewery where the beer was brewed - a 5 gallon batch of homebrew can be an AAL. I can see one objecting to calling those beers "macro beers" or "BMC brews" but "AAL"? They are American lagers brewed with adjuncts.
