This past week a friend of mine from college paid me a visit, he likes craft beer and knows that I always have craft and homebrews on hand. When I was shopping before his visit I noticed a 12 pack of Stag bottles and decided to have a laugh. We used to drink a Stag on occasion in college and I knew I would get a great reaction if I brought him one instead of a craft beer. I got cursed out (good naturedly) and we had something to drink after we burnt our palates out on some IPAs.

Now I have a few left and am trying one while sober without a wrecked palate and you know what? It isn't bad at all for what it is. It had been so long since I had one I assumed I only liked it relative to Keystone, but I definitely like it more than the Coors, Bud and Miller that I drink on occasion when someone else is offering me a beer. Maybe even more than Pabst, which has long been my go-to AAL for certain kinds of adventures.

Do you have a preferred AAL and why?

Gansett. If I live in an area that didnt sell it then PBR. Why, because they are sweeter and less harsh.

I have put away some nasty adjuncts in my youth before I discovered kick ass beer. I have never heard of Stag, who makes it? The name itself gets a laugh.

If New Glarus Totally Naked counts...then that. The perfect summer/lawnmower beer.

Otherwise, I don't know...PBR? I spent my early to mid-20s drinking a lot of it...it holds a special place in my heart. Nostalgia, sentiment, and all that. I'll still have one from time to time at a show if there's nothing better to be had.

Busch Light holds a special place in my heart, although I'm reminded why I don't drink it every time.

The bottle says "G. Heileman Brewing Co." in Milwaukee and Beer Advocate says Pabst. I'm guessing Heileman is owned by Pabst.

@MaximumYuks I don't think that Totally Naked has any adjuncts in it. And thanks for mentioning New Glarus. I forgot to mention that Stag should not be confused with Staghorn. :grinning:

Most of my friends are not craft beer fans. When it is my turn to buy beer I always go for a 30 rack of PBR. How could I not when it is $12.99?

I figured as much, but it was worth a try! Just a great non-adjunct lager then I suppose!

I'm partial to Hamms and Schlitz. I buy both on a somewhat regular basis, maybe once a month. In my opinion, they're the best of the bunch. In all honesty I can't tell you why I like those two best but I would suggest to give them a whirl.

Miller High Life. It's pleasant, not offensive, smooth. I don't mind Coors Banquet but don't get that often at all.

Isn't it all the '60s formula now? I know bottles and tallboys are. Do they still sell cases?

And with that thought I believe Schlitz is now all malt so it wouldn't actually be an adjunct lager come to think of it.

I don't think it's all malt. I had some Schlitz at my neighbors a couple of years ago, it was a good clean tasting beer, and definitely an adjunct lager.

In my head I thought that was the reason for the new (old) recipe but a quick search said nothing of all malt. I believe you're right. I throw Schlitz back in as a favorite adjunct lager.
