I'm not a huge fan of tripels, American or Belgian. OP, I'm not sure where you are in NY, but I got the chance to try Carton's new tripel, Gilded Lily, and it is unreal.

I haven't tried some of the better rated examples of the style, nor do I have readily available access to them, but I enjoyed New Belgiums tripel and look forward to trying Boulevard long strange tripel and tallgrass velvet rooster. I know that is probably of no help OP, just thought I'd throw in my two cents.

Boulevard Long Strange Tripel is a great representative of the style.

The Ovila Tripel is pretty good. My favorite is Westmalle.

Sly Fox's tripel, Incubus, was released several years ago with a hint (and i mean just a hint) of a residual candy sugar taste, and it opened up a fruity and relaxed character in the beer which was very enjoyable and which made a lot of other flavors accessible. Not since then. It's still a very good beer, but a bit too dry for my liking.

Weyerbacher Merry Monks. It was my favorite beer, period, for a while.

I agree : I just bought 6 the other night and the quality wasn't the same from the previous time I bought / it just seemed off. I don't know if this reflex anything but the bottle style has even changed with a cheaper looking lable . should been my first clue.

Out of my top 15 tripels, the following are American-made (with one international collaboration)...
    1. Curieux (bourbon barrel aged)
    2. Tropical Tripel, which was a collaboration between CCB and De Proefbrouwerij (retired).
    3. Rockmill's Cask Aged Tripel (whiskey barrel aged)
    4. Avery's Nineteen, though that's retired...
    5. Adelbert's Tripel B
    6. Golden Delicious (apple brandy barrel aged) from Capt. Lawrence
    7. Bees in the Trappe from Grimm Artisanal Ales

I also loved Cerberus, but my crash course in craft came straight out of draft Green Flash Trippel at the Blue Tusk in Syracuse, NY. It was a damn good one for sure! Looking forward to trying lots more!

I don't mind buying a Westmalle Tripel in an American store...does that count?

I'll have to go with Allagash, if I must limit myself to the new world.

I revisited Westmalle tripel recently, and then Chimay tripel for the first time, and loved them both. So I bought Tripel Karmeliet this weekend and hated it. Tasted like a bad hefe to me. I haven't had an American I liked even close to Westmalle and Chimay.
