What's your favorite book about beer? Looking for a Christmas gift for my craft drinking brother in law.

Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher is good if he's newer.

Oxford Companion to Beer would make a good gift

    +1 to these,
    I enjoyed
The Brewmaster's Table, also by Garret Oliver who edited the Oxford Companion to Beer

I will always suggest Michael Jackson's books as a first. He really was one of the pioneers to where we are at currently. Not to mention, he's just plain awesome.

The Drawing of the Dark by Tim Powers. Fiction, but fantastic. Brings a mysticism to what is, in essence, a mystic's quest.

Check out Beer Blast. I'm only about 70 pages into it but I recommend it. It's about the marketing battles of the mass brewers trying to get your money.

I second this one. Jackson's books generally predate the craft explosion in this country, so you won't find many of your favorites, but they are excellent books nonetheless. My favorites are ``Michael Jackson's Beer Companion'' and ``Ultimate Beer''.

"Audacity of Hops" was a good read, even if light on contributions by PA brewers.

"The Naked Pint" was informative and easy to read.

The oxford companion to beer makes a really good gift but brewed awakening is another fun easy read.

Look at Amber, Gold and Black from Martyn Cornell , a properly researched work rather more reliable than the Oxford Companion.Martyn has written other books too.
Ron Pattinson ( patto1ro ) has written a shelf full of books worth considering; all of them based on contemporary records and not, like so many beer books, reprocessed folklore

    Brewmaster's Table by Garrett Oliver.

Full rich description of food/beer pairing mixed with some information about some versions of the different styles of beer and a nice setting of beer and beers in historical context. Interesting read.
