The Barstow on Allens Ave! Anyone been here? It's great and cheap. Somewhere around 14 taps (Duchess de Bourgone, Jack D'or, 1809 Berliner, Flower Power, etc...) the most expensive beer is like $9 and it's the duchess which Juliens had for $12! Food's real good too.

Haven't been there, but when you said Allen's Ave it reminded me that What Cheer Tavern is a great place. OP, check that one out for sure.

What cheer is cool, but the atmosphere is real weird. It's really small and last time I was there, there was 3 drunk college kids yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs and the bartender just told them to be quiet or he was going to kick them out. I guess I need to give it another runaround.

Has anyone been to The English Cellar Ale House over by Thayer Street? Apparently they have over 200 beers there and from my looks at the list a lot of them seem good and many I have never head of.

Anyone have an opinion on The Wickenden Pub on Wickenden St. ? Drove by it today and saw a bunch of beers in the window.

The ale house is solid, most stuff is in bottles but they now have rotating taps with some solid stuff. Haven't tried the food but it looks good and everything is reasonably priced for a beer bar.

Can vouch for the Barstow. The owner/chef is the guy from Julians, Mike McHugh.

Good beers and very good food. Prices seemed a little better than Ghoulians

Beer wise, it sucks. I used to live right next door and would stop in on the regular. They have "99 beers" and all but maybe eight of them are in bottles (that are old by the way). The taps are rubbish: Harp, Bass, Sam Seasonal, Guinness etc., though there is usually something decent on draft. With all that said, I gotta through a little props to them because they let you order (I think) 1L mugs. Having a 1L mug of Noble Pils when it was still a Sam Seasonal was pretty bad ass. If you're gonna go, on a Saturday afternoon before the Brown kids wake up. I have had some good times at that place between 3:00 and 5:00 on Saturdays. But again, don't be looking for anything special for beer.

Also, to the OP. Be sure to check out The Grange, it's on the corner of Broadway and Dean St. in Providence. They are a restaurant first, but they have some nice taps. If you're into liquor, they make a damn good Manhattan. New Year's Eve this year I had a Manhattan, a pint of Berkshire Steel Rail Pale Ale and, drum roll....., a pint of Flower Power (my favorite IPA of all time)! Nice way to end 2013. All this while eating some kick ass deviled eggs (topped with a jalepeno and fried shallot strings. Money!). If you do stay for dinner, know that it's all vegetarian, no meat. But it's damn good food (and this is coming from someone quiet particular about restaurants). At the very least, have a few brews at the bar (which is a nice spot to hang). The Grange, Julian's, E & O and The Avery are all within easy walking distance of one another (Scurvy Dog and Louis Fuller's are not a far stroll away either). Take a night out, hoof it to all of them and have a nice time. A nibble at The Grange, a nibble at Julian's and then finish it all off with Chicago style stuffed pizza at Sicilia's, which is also within walking distance. Is it the best pizza around? Not even close. But it's open until 2 AM and you don't need to drive to get there. Just make sure you're cool with shitting your pants the entire next day.

My favorite Sicilia's story was when buddy and I were moving out of apartment in Providence. We spent the entire afternoon and evening packing up our trucks. It took way longer than we thought (typical move, right?). Anyway, by the time we were finished, it was late and we were beat, neither of us wanted to drive the 30 minutes to our parents houses where we were both spending a couple of nights until our new digs were ready to be moved into (he was moving in with his girl, I was off to a different part of town with some other friends). So we did what anyone would do: We went to the bar and got shit-house on Old Milwaukee's. We set our phone alarms for 1:45 AM to remind us to call in a Sicilia's delivery because they would deliver even after they closed. We went back to our now empty and pristine apartment, unrolled two sleeping bags in the baron living room, smoked a J, and upon it's arrival, devoured a pizza stuffed with pepperoni, spinach and black olives. The next morning we woke up terrified that our landlord was going to come in with the new tenants, see us in our sleeping bags, with the pizza box and a roach (and there was a bottle of Jack too) on the floor, with the whole joint smelling like farts. Though, as terrified of this as we were, we took our sweet ass time getting out of there. We cleaned up, packed up, pulled out of the driveway and left the place, never to return.

Sorry, had to get nostalgic there.

Could either of you provide me with a bit more info on Barstow. My buddy and I may check it out. My first question is, what are the taps like. Julian's is slammed with Belgians. I can't stand Belgians right not, lost my taste for them completely about 18 months back. Seeing tap lists dominated by them is a bummer. Any chance of a sessionable pilsner, ESB, Kolsch, Pale Ale popping up on Barstow's line? Also, what's the bar like, is it a place where folks can hang for a while, or is it just a spot to have a brew while you wait for a table?

Truthfully, regardless of your answers I'll probably still end up going, as it's a local business trying to do good food and good beer, which I want to support. I just want to have an idea of what I'm getting into.

    Cheers!
