Ok so let me start off by saying how embarrassed I am that I lived in Austin up until 3 years ago and totally slept on everything going on beer wise. I will be hitting up Jester King either Friday night or first thing Saturday to pick some things up. I'm only down there for the weekend and have 2 little ones but I want to hit up at least one other brewery, what are yall's favorites?

Another vote for JK on Fridays/Sundays; Saturday is good too, but much busier if the weather is nice. It's also kid-friendly.

Hops & Grain and ABW are also good, but I wouldn't recommend bringing the kids along. 512 might be better in that regard, but I haven't been since their anniversary party.

Jester King provides the best setting in the hill country. I like hops and grain...the greenhouse seldom disappoints. Went to ABW today and really enjoyed all the different beers they were pouring...definitely worth getting to taste those.

Depends on if you like the beers or the taproom setup more....

Best taproom in Austin area - Thirsty Planet and Twisted X, by far

Best beer - depends on who you ask.

IMO - start with these: Jester King, Hops and Grain, ABW, and Twisted X

Other places that brew their own beer after those already mentioned would be Pinthouse Pizza and Black Star Co-Op, and both are very family friendly

I love pinthouse pizza, I went last time a few months ago and the Jaguar shark and nitro The Dude were awesome. I plan on doing Dinner there with the parents. I think I'm gonna have to hit up ABW, that gold fists sounds too good to pass up. Thanks for the info guys!

Also, if you want a nice, relaxing time, hit up the ABGB. Nicest group of guys working there. They also just tapped a really good saison.

Went to Jester King for the first time today, it was AWESOME.
Sad to say it was better than any of the Houston breweries I've been to, I enjoy Karbach a lot though

What Jester King has in atmosphere no one else around here can duplicate.

I agree that the Jester King experience, location, vibe, etc cannot be beat. At this point, with JK's brewpubish facility, I don't think you can compare that to the production breweries that are Saint Arnold, Karbach, etc. That being said, if in Houston Saint Arnold lunches during the week are excellent, and they have done a great job of making the generic brewery tour more interesting and fun with stuff like Pub Night. Also, really looking forward to what Karbach has coming up with their expansion (new tap room and restaurant capabilities).

I like Pinthouse but at night it can be tough to find a spot to sit.

I haven't been to H&G since they expanded the taproom (going down to Austin this weekend) but I've always enjoyed the lineup and the ability to drift around the complex while drinking.

I like Pinthouse but there's always loud kids and wailing babies. Beer is what draws me there and sometimes I luck out and there's no kids.

Yeah the people who can't control their kids shouldn't be going out, it's not Chuck E Cheese. Being pretty young myself it's frustrating to see parents just let their kids go rabid around a place while they enjoy themselves. We got a few awkward stares taking my 6 month old there but the 2 of us split a flight so we drank a whopping 13oz. of beer each!

Oh come on kids aren't that bad, I have been going to bars since I was a week old...um, wait maybe that is my problem
