I know its kinda 'old news' around here, but I picked up a 12er of Odell IPA in cans the other day. Its easily still my favorite west coast IPA in the gizzame. Especially when you pour it out the can...

Also- tried DDs "NEIPA" the other night and was confused on so many levels:

    --Why's it opaque brown/tan?
    --Was it dry hopped?
--What hops were even used? Seemed way too piney for the categorization.
--More than anything- what's up with the disgusting brown amoeba-like dealy that was on the bottom???!?

Did anyone else try this yet?
It didn't taste bad per se, but it certainly didn't seem to be what it said it was. Still won't order another though...

I thought DD's IPA was awesome. Mine was not brown or tan at all. I think I have a pic on my phone.
If you found something brown in the can, it was probably yeast. I find yeast in a lot of my beers, esp Odd13 cans, and it's not a big deal.

This was a draft beer. It had the brown tone of a baby's diaper... and it was hardly an acceptable amount of yeast, assuming that's what the amoeba was.

Whoa! Sorry to hear about your experience! Not sure what would be going on with that can.

First, the hops we use are:
Mosaic (Tropical fruit, floral, sometimes woody)
Ekuanot (formerly Equinox. Lime/citrus, tropical fruit)
Cascade (we had our lot hand selected for the big orange rind character you can get from Cascade)

When this beer is super fresh it will have a bit of pine in the aroma. After a week or two of being packaged, that fades quite a bit and pear, papaya, mango come to the forefront.

Second, this beer isn't supposed to be a NEIPA as one would typically expect. I've been calling it "inspired by," which if I'm being honest, I'm starting to regret it a bit because it seems a lot of people are latching on to just the NEIPA. We use a lot of malted spelt and flaked oats. It has a higher terminal gravity and lower IBUs than what I would shoot for with a West Coast IPA. Then, as listed above, we did throw in an old school hop in addition to two newer ones. There are some earlier hop additions (starting at 20 minutes left in the boil) instead of all knockout or whirlpool. We use English Ale Yeast (002, our house yeast) and not London Ale III or Conan. It is unfiltered, but we do fine it to help drop quite a bit of the yeast out.

As mentioned earlier, we have seen some clumping of the residual yeast, proteins, and polyphenols. We did test batches that were keg only and didn't see the clumping, and we are still not seeing it in the kegs. For some reason we are only seeing it in the cans, so we are researching that and changing a few of our processes to help alleviate that. Our goal is to keep it unfiltered and uncentrifuged because we feel that's what best for flavor and aroma in this beer.

Anyway, back to the most pressing issue. I'm not really sure what would be going on with those cans. Sounds like some high DO (dissolved oxygen) cans may have snuck through. I'll get in touch via private message so I can get more information on your 6 pack and figure out how to get you a replacement.

Just saw that you were talking about draft. Not aware of this, and I'll look into it. My offer still stands.

I've actually only had the new DD IPA on draft and have been very happy with it. It's faintly opaque, but I wouldn't even call it hazy. Color-wise it's only a shade darker than a blonde ale.
I almost wonder if the brown abomination wasn't the right beer.

Except for the amoeba-like yeast residue he cites. Great description of the flocculation I had in my DDIPA.

The weird thing is that isn't usually there with the draft one. I've had it on tap 4 times and that's not really there. Not even faint weizen-level residue. It sounds like Heady topper, which typically has a lot of the yeast gunk at the bottom of the can.

Taking the New Belgium tour today I chuckled to see 6-packs of Codename: Superfan and Thirdteen sitting in NB's yeast propagation room.

Well, they have to get good IPAs to drink from SOMEWHERE, don't they?

Either that or for research into making a watermelon-lime-orange peel NEIPA

Can't help but notice that I don't hear you people talking bout Citradellic around here... well- my neighbor dropped off a 6er a while back and I finally opened one.

Now I know why... literally couldn't finish it.

The tangerine or lime version? The tangerine one tasted pretty close to the other citrus spiked IPA's out there. It wasn't necessarily one of the better ones, but I felt it was okay. Never had the lime, though.

Having a Thirdteen cent now. Man that's tasty. I wouldn't mind if it was a year round beer..
