I recently had Garún Icelandic Stout NR.19 and was very impressed by the level of complexity/depth of flavor that it had compared to imperial stouts that I am accustomed to.

This style is definitely one in which I would like to try on a more regular basis so I was wondering what were some of the better variations available....(something that I may not have to trade for would be optimal)

Standard RIS: Fresh Sierra Nevada Narwhal. Incredibly fruit-forward and malty, in contrast to the more chocolate profiles (FIS, Brooklyn BCS, or Stone IRS) or licorice profiles (Expedition or Rasputin) of other RISs.

Stout with fruit added: Evil Twin From Amager with Love

Strong agreement with those who've mentioned Belgian style stouts, too. In addition to Black Albert and Dark Truth, add Weyerbacher Tiny and Lost Abbey Serpent's Stout.

This is a great synopsis of the standard RIS, which also happens to highlight why I never liked Narwhal and why I love Stone IRS:wink:

I'd also throw Humboldt (Firestone Walker) Black Xantus in there, as it's partially aged in red-wine barrels, which certainly contributes a dark fruit character. This one also has coffee, just FYI. Good stuff, if not exactly up my alley

Darkness (non barrel-aged) best exemplifies a cornucopia of dark fruit flavors in a RIS for me.

Maybe it's just me but I always get a lot of dark fruit from Ten Fidy.

The Abyss comes to mind (likely because it is one that I've had most recently). It really showed some nice dark fruit flavors. But really, I think my palate usually finds a nice dose of dark fruit (raisin, cherry, plum) on most Imperial Stouts that I would consider favorites, so I would have to say:

    Old Rasputin
    Stone IRS
    Bell's Expedition

However, the most fruit-forward stout that I have ever had: Dogfish Head WWS. Hands down. Raisin-BOMB.

If you're not finding enough versions available in your neck if the woods, you might want to broaden your search to include Baltic Porters. I find dark fruit flavors to be a hallmark of that style while still giving you a stout-ish fix too.

This is where the English stouts shine - they will have more of a fruity yeast signature. The big daddy is probably Samuel Smith's Imperial Stout, but Courage Imperial is also very fine. For lower gravity also look to St Peter's stouts.

The Guiness Foreign Extra is a spot on suggestion as well.
