After my original post, I had my first bottle of MBC MO... I agree with your assessment. It's wicked good.

Dale's is a no brainer and the best going. Smuttynose Isle of Shoals and obviously Sierra Neveda. Kona's Pale Ale isn't shabby either.

Hoppy birthday, great smell and taste. I loved it and I am not even a fan of pale ales.

At 7.5%, I would put that in the (failed to deliver enough hops) IPA category - and more abv than the OP is looking for.

Another vote for Victory Headwaters - imo the best beer that came out last year.

As I alluded to in my OP, I don't care what it's called. I'm interested in discovering ales that are hoppy, flavorful, and in the vicinity of 5% ABV. As I understand the conventions of categorization, this would be either a hoppier-than-usual ABA or a lower-alcohol-than-usual IPA.

BTW, thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be sure to check out Victory Headwaters, which is a lot easier to get here than HF Edward.

The OP cannot easily get Three Floyds, Alpine or Half Acre, so no Zombie Dust/Alpha King, Hoppy Birthday or Daisy Cutter

Right now, it is Widmer Drifter. I used to be on the Dale's Pale Ale train, but after I had it recently, it just did not really do it for me. I mean, it was still very good, but was not in the same class for me as Drifter or Alpha King.

Aside from the obvious choices local to me in Chicago (ZD and Daisy Cutter), I'm a big fan of Emmett's Pale Ale. The hop profile reminds me of ZD, although not on the same level.
