It makes me quite sad that there are so few well-made American hefeweizens. Even worse, they tend to sit on the shelf so long that they taste like junk.

All y'all need to come to Albuquerque. 3 different brewers did one in the last two months (La Cumbre <which does La Llorona every year>, Bosque Brewing, and Boxing Bear Brewing). The latter two bottled theirs. Baltic Porters that is.

Saisons, one of my favorite 3-5 styles and there just aren't many available. I drink a ton of funkwerks and boulevard tank 7 but other than that they aren't super available.

Echoing what most others have said above, I'd go for more english bitters/esb. I'd also like to throw a vote in for dunkelweizen, a damn good style that doesn't get much play outside of the German imports.

Brown ales, dunkelweizens and rye beers (why do brewers neglect such a great grain?)

If you haven't already tried it, Von Trapp out of Vermont does a solid Munich Dunkel, and they have a pretty decent distro (at least here in Mass).

As for OP, if we're talking domestic breweries, I have yet to really see a good hefeweizen. I know a number of breweries do their own versions, but I don't think anything touches German imports. I think it is totally within reach too so I am just curious as to why we haven't seen a better attempt at this style.
