I like overhead as one do a couple different beers in a night. I like 077XX if I'm drinking a couple. Plus the Maloney's/Cloverleaf/Boyle's variants are just bomb.

I like Trap Rock's fall seasonal and they once made a double IPA that was KILLER. I forgot what the name of it was but it was just amazing.

The brewer at Trap Rock has brewed any number oh excellent DIPSs over the years. Always at least a bit different from each other.

It's clear I need to give Trap Rock another chance. Do they have a site that updates whenever one of their double IPAs is on tap?

Also, just chiming in: if Kane and Carton were to ever can their IPAs it would be some of the most sought-after IPAs along the coast. Was thinking earlier how awesome it would be if they released them in 16oz canned 4-packs like Boat.

Carton uses a mobile canning station for Boat, hell, someone should just start a mobile canning business then for Kane and Carton.......

    Head High in cans?
    077XX in cans?
    Driftline in cans?
    Carton of Milk in cans?

    NJ's rep would explode overnight.

My vote was for Overhead but nobody has mentioned Carton 077-07006 which I thought was excellent. And I did not realize until the 2nd time i had it that it is a different beer than the Carton 077XX. Maybe Augie can weigh in on what he was thinking with the 07006 name(Caldwell zip code?) as it is very confusing and i doubt most people know they are 2 different beers.

I believe it's brewed specifically for Cloverleaf, which is in that zip code. The 077XX is a homage to the region where Carton hails.

As big of a Kane fan as I am (I think they're far and away the best in our state) I gotta give 077XX a slight edge over Overhead. Head High is my favorite NJ beer ever though. Exit 16 is one of the beers that made me fall in love with hops as well. I used to grab a 6er of it every time I saw it.

with the exception of like 2 towns all the zip codes in Monmouth County are "0 7 7 something something" so we called our double IPA 077XX. we do a yearly bus tour based around a boondoggle in which we gave O'Dub a third dry hopping with a specific hop for the first hand full of bars to take on Boat and named it after their specific zip code. they are

    077-07006 Sorachi, 07750 Nelson Sauvon, 07747 Galaxy, 07732 Cascade, 07712 Centennial, 077-07302 Warrior, 07701-Apollo, 07740 Simcoe

the Cloverleaf and Boyle's beers are year round at this point otherwise we make the others for the annual trip and when we do events at those bars.

I was looking into doing this but there are a few major set backs. One of which is a huge buy into a franchise for one of the better canning units. The other is storing the unused cans as bulk buys are needed to save money. Smaller companies also need a sleeve laminate like machine to get their labels on (Manayunk Brewery uses these) and they don't have the same quality as printed cans which obviously cost more.

I agree though, you would be very busy with a lot of great local breweries.

Thanks for the explanation Augie. I do love the 07006 and will have to look out for the other varieties. And if you are looking to do a Citra version, I am in Livingston 07039.

This is the kind of thing i like to say in person because typed it runs the risk of sounding like i take our ideas too seriously.
but: Philosophically what Dub does is not lean heavily on over dry hopping to make it special. As much as we dry hop- we bitter, mid-addition, knock out and so on. Our idea behind our east coast version of the big bold american doubles was that it should be pushed to be as bitter and aromatic and sweet as the big mouth feel of higher alcohol allows.
All in its a beer about its body and the components that create it more than how hoppy we can make a beer smell. We are very happy with it as is and in general rather than looking to variant it we'd rather go looking for whole new flavors from beginning to end.
When we do these additional hops we are making a beer much more like the big ****ty dry hop bombs that are currently so interesting. Since these are fantastic beers its fun to push it around that way but it makes it a different and more typical beer.
For example 077-07706 jams a lemon zest sensation right through the middle of all the fruits/pines/weed in Dub. its a fun game to play but the heavy one note push rides over a lot of the layers that are balanced in the base that reveal themselves the longer you drink it.
In general when we want to make a "hop bomb" beer we make things like SS2012 and Epitome. I am not saying we will never do more other 077variants its just so far they are born organically of relationships with cool bars after a while and learning what flavors are exciting to those people. If we had more tanks and space we'd be making other beers, 077xx is what it is and it makes us very happy. On to the next one (l>l)

It seems to have bit the dust when Harvest Moon changed brewers, but the Hops^2 DIPA they brewed was my favorite pre-Kane/Carton beer in NJ. It had a 4.19 avg with 22 reviews, so I wasn't the only one who liked it. It was unfiltered and had a ton of intense pine and citrus going on.
