I was attacked in a thread this past week that mentioned that lagers and "pilseners" were superior...

Had a Freewheel Brewery London Calling made in Redwood, CA on a trip to CA recently. A solid American interpretation of English Cask Ale. At 3.5%, a real session beer with the subtleties and complexities only cask ale offers. Could not stay away from it. I hope that I can find a local equivalent in NC soon.

What a great question! I think I miss out on a lot of carbonated goodness because I tend to gravitate toward the higher ABVs.

A great session beer that truly fits the bill as it's a low ABV brew is Wittekerke witbier, versus traditionally higher ABV beers that are dumbed down while trying to maintain good/great taste. Wittekerke is my "beach beer." However, as a Hop Head, I've got to go with Founders All Day as the best session IPA. But, the beer with the most flavor and lowest ABV is 21st Amendment Bitter American. Really impressed with the complexities that are present given the wicked low ABV.

Brooklyn lager definitely. Long Trail mostly cloudy is okay too.

im so glad i saw someone mention this beer for its majestic showing as a session beer. haha
its pleasant grainy taste is so subtle that i feel i can drink it forever.
Hofbrau is one too, and pilsner urquell or czechvar, almost any lager from german or czech is my go to drink when it comes to having a session beer. and i never get a hangover from these beers.

I've tried several "session" ales with 5-ish% alcohol. What are your favorites, and why?

Lakefront Extended Play. The first Session IPA I've had that really had enough malt backbone for me. Their "My Turn" Andy Pub Ale is really good too.

Green Flash Citra Session - Aroma and taste of sweet tangy bitter citrus
Fat Head's Sunshine Daydream is great for the same reasons, but I may give the edge to Citra Session

    Green Flash Citra
Grapefruit and piney up front with a mellow back end. Big flavor with low ABV. Flavor could fool you into thinking it's a bigger/stronger beer .

Stone Levitation is always hard to beat. I did have the previously mentioned Green Flash Citra, somewhat perplexed why right now its only in bombers and not six-packs.
