Late this fall I sent out a couple of boxes: nothing crazy. 20 lbs. give or take. I'd taken to creating my own labels on FedEx.com because it's faster & more convenient just to drop off the boxes & run. However when I received my credit card statement, the charges were for $54 & $57 for the two boxes. WTF? I know from experience that sending boxes of this size, to these locations, generally runs me about $30 give or take. So I started hand-writing labels again. And my charges are reasonable once more. Anybody else ever run into this? My local FedEx office has always been great & I've never had any issues with them, but this just smack of profit-padding, because I'm 100% sure those charges were inflated.
Hm...you scared me into looking at my charges, but they all look normal to me. Had 2 last month for close to 30lbs, 1 from Philly to SF, 1 from Portland to Philly, both were $36. You may want to talk to @dmbforever though. I know he ran into some fraudulent charges that didn't match with what he shipped.
FedEx and UPS recently changed their focus to dimensional weight...essentially 2 boxes can weigh the same and go to the same place, but if one of the boxes is actually larger in dimension than the other its going to cost significantly more. http://www.efulfillmentservice.com/2014/09/new-fedex-ups-dimensional-weight-rules/
Yup, not the problem here. I recently sent a very similar box (same dimensions, close to the same weight) to the same state & it came out as $32.
Well, I've definitely had quite an experience with this happening to me. I have had my own FedEx account for sometime now to print out labels and drop my packages off. Its been working out great, no questions asked when dropping off the goods. I also have a "higher" end digital scale, which is spot on in weighing my boxes and has been calibrated on a regular basis to make sure of its accuracy. I bought the higher end scale because of the amount of trading I personally do to ensure I would be charged accordingly for weight. I also don't cheat on box size measurements and always go to the next inch in measuring. I'm only stating this because I want everyone to know that no corners are cut, so my charges on my labels should be close to the actual estimate they give me when I print out the label. This was linked to one of my credit cards, which is really only used for large purchase items and my addiction for trading. When I received my December statement, I was just going to pay it online (like I normally do) a certain amount. I never really look over my bill to tee, but rather just pay accordingly. For some reason, I decided to this time. When looking it over closely, there was a $100 charge for FedEx on December 24th. I print out all my receipts from my labels and know for certain when I've shipped something out. The last time I sent out a package was (2) weeks prior to Christmas. NOT Christmas Eve. This made me dig deeper into my statements from prior months. I found other charges of $97, $88, $67, $76, $58, etc all from FedEx throughout the year dating back to my April statement. I was floored to say the least, because I'm very well knowledable on shipping costs of my packages, which usually on average, are between $15-35. I called my CC company and was told they only go back (30) days on fraudulent activity. Somehow I got lucky and the guy went all the way back to April. I spent over an hour on the phone going through each statement with him asking me questions on anything over $35.00. I did take all of the ones that were between $35.00 - $45.00, because I took those as ones that I was likely charged more for the new shipping costs. When it was all said and done, there were close to $900.00 of fraudulent activity on my account, which they credited me back. I had to get a new credit card and I changed my password. I got lucky!!! I took something for granted that I thought would never happen to me. I hope people read my long winded story, so the same thing doesn't happen to you. LOOK OVER YOUR STATEMENT EVERY MONTH!!
Well, that's a fucked up story. I know I've been watching my statement closely ever since. This bears repeating.
This is why I pay with PayPal. I use debit so I can't call up and dispute transactions. Paypal is nice for things like this. I would just say they overcharged me and if they don't respond within 30 days or so it's auto refunded. Now I have never disputed a fedex transaction but they may have people sitting around responding to these, if not, you're good to go. Good luck and thanks for the heads up. I checked mine and it seems all clear.
I'm sure this was considered, but I routinely have fedex combine charges for shipments that are delivered close together. Not only that, but I'm sometimes not charged for up to a week or longer from delivery of the box...which in turn is sometimes two weeks from shipment. Were these factors considered? Some of those charge totals you mentioned might be a combination of 3 separate charges into one invoice. I'm sure someone would have caught that though if they actually refunded you all that money...
Agreed with @kbuzz on this. I've recently taken a look at some of my fedex statements and I have records for all of my boxes sent. Boxes sent on the same day were occasionally posted together (i.e. 3 boxes into 1 charge) and sometimes as separate. On one occasion I'm pretty sure the 6 boxes I dropped off ended up being three charges, 3 boxes in one charge, 2 in another, and the last box in the third charge. My suggestion is to always get a rate quote online when creating the label (its one of the boxes on the right, 'transit times and rates' I believe its called). If you think you were overcharged for something you can take a look at the rate quote in your shipping history (go into 'Create Shipment', then 'Ship History', and check the box next to what you want to review and click on 'View Details'), or you can do the same thing in 'Reports'. Then compare that to the amount in your bills ('Manage' then 'View/Pay Bills' and then toggle the days tab until you get to the right place). I just did that for the last 7 boxes I sent. I found two they charged me about a dollar more on compared to the rate quote. Unlike @dmbforever I do fudge some of my measurements a little sometimes, so having 2 out of 7 adjusted by $1 sounds about right to me.
Same experience here and kbuzz and treznor. I'd go over the charges very carefully. It just might be combined.
