So after 50+ trades I had a bottle break on a West Coast trade last week - turns out it was an extra and not the main event so I was still able to complete the trade as they shipped it back to me. However since then I've had a personal call from my FedEx account executive (didn't even know I had one) and yesterday received a pretty stern letter from their legal dept warning me to knock it off.

Has this happened to other folks? Is this a form letter / covering the bases exercise from FedEx? Will my account/packages be flagged for extra scrutiny?

Appreciate any input folks can provide

I had this same thing happen to me about 2 months ago and I just played dumb saying i didn't know you couldn't ship alcohol. I have since shipped about 5 boxes with no issues. I was worried about flagging too but seems it's protocol to save their ass. I'd maybe wait for a little to ship again but you should be fine. Hope that helps!

I got a letter and I stopped shipping. The letter was the typical one everyone else gets but I was getting burned out on trading and shipping anyways and the letter was just he icing on the cake. I got it back in May. In my 50 trades in two years I've only gotten one letter. I know alcohol laws are different in different states and I didn't feel like taking any chances anytime soon.

I'll probably attempt to trade in the future but for now I'm glad I have stopped. Regardless of "against policy or illegal or frowned upon or slaps on the wrist with letters" everyone still ships tons of beer every single day with no issue so I think you'll be alright. I just chose to stop.

    Cheers

Did the letter read that authorities could possibly be notified?

If you're looking to worry less, I would switch to UPS. A few dollars more sometimes, but they don't care nearly as much. I had a shipment break and had a $54 dollar claim on it accepted. They did not say a word about it being against policy.

Don't worry. FedEx isn't contacting the authorities. And they aren't going to flag your account. I received my first letter from FedEx after ~100 shipped trades. I've shipped another ~50 since then with no issues. And I never took a break or switched to UPS.

There was at least 1 report that they terminated the account and will no longer ship to and from the address/person. Outgoing isn't an issue, but terminating incoming may make it difficult for the person: http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/fedex-account-terminated-for-trades.314701/

I'd advise caution and do everything you can, @brennser, to avoid breakages and leakages (ziploc and trash bag, etc.). I actually stopped using FedEx for several weeks after getting my letter.

1 letter is not a big deal at all. But if you do continue to use FedEx, make sure to be extra careful with future packages. You'll be fine if you do so.

This depends on your local hub. I had a completely different experience with UPS. I had an instance where a package being sent to me leaked on one of their trucks. Not only did they confiscate the box and flag me, they started screening all of my incoming packages. I had two additional boxes confiscated for containing alcohol. I have shipped Fedex ever since. Fedex has shipped a leaking box back to sender a couple of times with no questions asked.

thanks all for your comments and advice - judging by your replies it really is all just down to the luck of the draw - will just try to be extra careful w packaging from now on

Got my first letter today from FedEx after somewhere around 50ish trades. Was a little concerned after reading it, but it doesn't seem that uncommon.

    Congrats you've popped your cherry.
I got a letter & constant calls because I don't answer calls from unfamiliar numbers from my acct rep (also no clue that I had one) who left messages but I never called back. Stopped trading for a month then sent a feeler package (easy to replace) with no issues & have been good since. That was about a year or so ago

For you guys who continued to trade after FedEx confiscated your boxes/you got that boilerplate legal letter, did you continue to use the at-home pickup option? Same account or did you create a new one? Cheers!

Ive only had 1 FedEx letter due to a breakage. From what I understand if FedEx catches you for the second time they ban your account. Unless you completely change your last name and shipping address as well as financial information you wont be allowed to create antoher account.

I've gotten two letters, same name, same address, same account. Though I never use at-home pickup (from the original question).

Is this confirmed? As someone who recently got his first I'm curious.

Sorry, should have followed up and finished the thought: I've gotten two letters and have had no repercussions. No account ban, no anything, and I've shipped a number of times since then. Both of my letters have even come after shipping to the same person (again, check with your partner to see if there are any issues with either shipper in their area).

Ive seen 2 similar posts about this on Facebook before with the same result. Not sure if its the norm but it can happen.

I've never used in home pickup, I print the label at home, tape it on the box & drop off at a Fedex/Kinkos. I walk in with the box, put it on the counter & say "I don't need a receipt" then walk out 3 seconds later. My Fedex/Kinkos is open 7 days a week & 6am-midnight most days & that is how I have always done it....before & after my letter.

I've heard of people getting multiple letters with no repercussions so it really seems to depend on the area that you live in that determines if they want to close your account
