For a while I have been singing the virtues of FEDEX, no more! This week a package was shipped to me from WA from a trader that I have traded with many times. The beer was well packed in a styro shipper. Some flunky at FEDEX said he heard the squeaking that a bottle makes rubbing on styro. Mr. Helpful took it to "Quality Assurance" for further investigations. The openned the box and found beer and proceeded to repack it and return to sender. They told me that in Vermont it was legal for wine only, not for beer or spirits.

I ship alot and will be getting an account with UPS. I know it's not legal, but this package was properly packed, no leaking and no there was no good reason to open it except for being total assholes.

unfortunately, that's the risk you run whenever you ship a box of beer. sucks that they opened it, but look on the bright side... they didn't have to return it to you? they could have confiscated it right there and then

On this point you are correct. The fact that they openned it without real probable cause is my major complaint.

That's odd since a lot of consumer goods come packed in styrofoam and I am sure other products make squeaky noises as well.

and that is a justifiable complaint

Note to self: Get job at fedex, listen for squeaking, steal beer.

I don't think calling the FedEx workers assholes is justified. As noted above, the package was returned to sender and you were out what, $15-25? That sucks, but at the same time that is much better than being out $25 and a styro filled with beer. When listening to the horror stories from other people between domestic and international shipments, I really think this is a minor inconvenience.

This happened to me with a styro shipper a while back that I sent out. I just opened a UPS account and we've been using them when shipping to each other ever since. I'm pretty sure he exclusively uses UPS now on all trades to mitigate risk.

Also, simply turning many styro shippers on their side will still create the noise of the bottles. Using something like rice to create a little bit of noise isn't a bad idea, even with shippers.

I had a similar thing happen to me with a box sent my way. I offer to cover the cost of shipping when he resent the box and he said no worries that they didn't charge him for the first one.

Yeah, I mean he could have heard the squeaking then shook it to hear the liquid sloshing....this is my fear with shipping. So I am going to go overboard with packaging, and add something like dried beans or something that roll around in the box when you shake it.

I had the same thing happen.. trader from WA shipped me a case of cantillon, it made it all the way across the country onto the truck for delivery, then an overzealous driver heard squeaking/sloshing and flagged it, and the package got returned to sender. We waited a week, tried again, and voila...

Sorry to hear this story-- that sucks! At least the beer was sent back!

The sound of the styro halves rubbing on eachother might have been the culprit moreso than than a bottle rubbing on the styro.
    I've suggested these 3 ideas before;
You can put tape on styro halves where they meet to prevent them rubbing
Wrap all bottles with newspaper so they don't rub
Put wadded newspaper or bubblewrap on top of the styro before sealing the box-- it will hold the styro halves together which eliminates movement.

You got caught doing something against their policies and you're complaining about it? Either they had a good reason for opening it or they just did it on a whim, regardless, this is the risk you run when you ship something that is explicitly not allowed. Obviously they felt they had a good reason, and they were proven right when they found the contents of the package to be beer. You saying they had no good reason does not make it so.

I don't see any merit to this complaint.

I don't see what in the world this has to do with Fedex. It was the lone employee - could have just as easily happened with UPS.

Just send it again. Chances are it goes right through like most of our packages do.

Good choice with switch to UPS. I have had 0 problems with 60 boxes sent with UPS, and many received, but 3 prob.'s with boxes received from Fedex. I got one box that was repacked with all the best beers "broken and discarded" cough cough stolen cough cough, and only one remaining. I know Fedex is cheaper, but the reliability of UPS in my experience is worth the couple extra dollars.
