Earlier this week, for the first time in 2+ years of trading, I had something break in one of my packages. I'd sent 5 Crooked Stave bottles and a 32oz swing top growler to Chicago and on the day of delivery, while it was on the truck already, I received a message saying:

    Delivery exception -
    Damaged, handling per shipper instructions

After which time I received another notification, the next day, saying that the package was being returned to me. This morning I received it and luckily I received back 4 of the 5 Crooked Stave bottles and surprisingly, the growler intact (I'd assumed that the growler had broken.)

Concurrent with all of this, I had a thank you package going out to my Crooked Stave trustee in Denver which was scheduled for delivery yesterday and was pushed off until today. While the package showed as "On FedEx vehicle for delivery" the FedEx guy passed by his house and let him know that the package was taken off because they believed that it had alcohol inside of it. Apparently this was the second package to have this happen to him this week as earlier in the week a package (from VA) was also taken off of the truck for the same reason and then the tracking status showed something along the lines of "Delivery Exception - Forwarded to Government Warehouse" or the like.

So I have a few questions for you all, 1) have you ever had anything like this happen? 2) Did I get permanently flagged or is it a coincidence that I'd have two events happen like this in the course of a few days? 3) or was it my CS trustee who's flagged? 4) If you, or someone you know, works for FedEx and would be able to tell if either of us are flagged by entering the tracking number, please let me know and I'd BM it to you and be eternally grateful.

Any input you could provide would definitely be appreciated!

    Cheers,
    MK

I had the exact same thing happen with a shipment to Chicago a few weeks ago. Received my box back in perfect shape. It seems like there has been an issue recently with Chicago FedEx shipments, as there was a thread going a while back that several cases reported with Chicago in particular. I received a FedEx Legal notice a week after saying that I've been bad and that Santa is giving me coal in my socks this year. I've sent boxes since with no issues, including one to Chicago.

Which part of the story... The first or the latter?

I'd bet it's on your trustee's end, because I have the same shit happen to me. Now I have to ask people to ship UPS to me or give them a friend's address if they must ship fedex. I know of one other local that has to do this, as well as a trading partner in Oregon.

My issues started with a leaky incoming growler, and then two big boxes the next week got opened and returned to sender- "improper shipment". One of them was actually missing bottles from it (vintage Upland Kiwi and Gilgamesh.....)
