I don't know that the emergence of female craft drinkers can even be considered all that recent anymore. I'd say within the last 3-5 years down here in South Florida, it's been pretty common. The Funky Buddha Brewery serves only beer, no food or cocktails, so patrons are only there to drink crafts and quite often, the customer base is diverse enough gender wise that you wouldn't know whether there were more men or women in there without actually counting.

Lets not forget that there is a double standard that exists also.

3 men wearing football jerseys at a bar, watching the big game sit down at a table.
3 businesswoman sitting at a table in the same bar at a different table.

Two trays are brought out: one with 3 apple-tinis and one with a pitcher of beer and wings.

Now tell me if you haven't yet assumed which tables those orders would usually go to?

As a person who is both a professional and a football fan, I'd be a lot more willing to get wing sauce on my Zach Thomas jersey than I would on my button-downs.

Well, I also don't want to be that guy at a get-together with colleagues who has chicken wing sauce on his shirt!

My fiance has become more of a craft beer lover as I am always bringing home things to try. She is also nice enough to put up with my desires to get beer in random places, go on trips, etc from time to time. I would say she enjoys most any kind of beer, though she particularly likes sours ($$). Fortunately, she's not quite so keen on super resinous IPAs, so when I come into Jai Alai, HT, etc I have some flexibility in drinking them at my own pace!

What a cool mom! Whenever I bring beer over to my mom's she tells me I should save my money instead.

I'm glad craft breweries aren't playing the 'manly' card like the macros and differentiating beers for men and women with stuff like Chick Beer.

First I really doubt that, and my point was that using beer festival numbers to try and determine how much girls are interested in craft beer isn't that useful. Maybe if one of the mods have access to that kind of information, they could post the number of female and male members of this site, that would seem to be more useful.

I am a girl. I love craft beer. I am the one in charge of almost all of our beer purchases. I do have several friends who are also into craft, but the vast majority of the women I know prefer wine.

I'm a girl...note I did not say lady :-) And I love craft beer! The hoppier the better! I also wouldnt kick a good solid stout (barrel aged as well) outta bed. In fact, I converted my girlfriend who drank nothing but Mikes Hard Lime (shudder) to a craft beer girl as well. I just made her taste everything i drank until she finally went...hmmmm...that's not so bad! And the rest is history- she now loves pumpkin beers and darks...porters/stouts...in fact i really have to watch my beer drawer now...i created a monster...but thats the kind of monster i like! :-)
    Cheers!

Yet another female craft drinker here. As the name implies, I love my hound and I love good brews. Mostly into the darkies: browns, porters and stouts. But my gateway beer was Lost Coast Great White. My craft beer drinking buddies are dudes, generally my brother-in-law, and he is mostly into IPAs. My female friends can't seem to grasp the concept of really good beer and would rather pound PBR at $2.00 a pint. I have tried to explain that while they will spend a good $10 on multiple pints of PBR to get a good buzz, I can spend $7 on a nice stout and be at the same place, buzz-wise. I still have hope though and have been known to make mixed sixers of craft brews in my "cellar" for friends to try.

Well said. I agree that there shouldn't be a stigma and that beer is genderless. Just playing devil's advocate.

Come to Philly. The ones I'm friends with are from South Jersey, but most of the beer events are in Philly.

Don't really understand the shock (not sure if this is the right word). If you go to any beer festival or event there are usually plenty of women there. My wife unfortunately isn't one of them, as the only alcoholic drink I have ever gotten her to admit that she liked was Southern Tier Creme Bruele(sp?) but that is impossible to get around here...

I'm truly sorry to hear that. it occurs to me that there were a number of women doing things at Flying Fish when I just visited for a tour, and I don't think I noticed until you just mentioned it. Now I can recall that being the case in retrospect.

I was pretty much referring to the past few years when I mentioned the trend in the OP. I'm also sure it depends on the area where you're from, as to when the trend started kicking in. As I did point out in an earlier post, the nationwide percentage of female beer drinkers remains around 20%. That may not be reflective of the craft community or the beer community in a particular area, but it does say something.

nice avatar, trailer park boys was pretty funny.

Back on Topic, at my main bottle shop half the staff are women and they all are very knowledgable about craft beer and enjoy it as well.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, it's not everywhere and it's why I specifically reference South Florida. It would certainly be unfair to compare Boca Raton to Richmond, and the beer scene is still very much a man's world. But it's changing more and more everyday.
