Since you all packed my thread I would just like to let you know that everything is all good. FG seems in line with my style and I'm in to dry hopping. It's already hazy. Don't know if that's from the wheeat extract and oats in the boil or biotransformation. Either way it look like it's gonna be good. Tasted great

I'm sure you're relieved. Ain't it great when a plan comes together....

Shouldn't be an issue. Poodle dogs are touted as being one of the most intelligent breeds on the planet. But get just one of them to read it; if you ask a dozen poodles you'll get 13 different answers....and that's when the fight starts.

Well since you all packed my thread and went way off course I thought I'd give you an update...

FG was along the lines of a NE IPA. A tad higher than I was going for but it's my first recipe from scratch. Dry hopped with 2oz of citra pellets, 1oz of Galaxy pellets, and 1oz of mosiac pellets. Tomorrow is bottling day. Smells and tastes great. The haze is there. Don't know if that's from the massive dry hop or the combo of oatmeal in the boil and whet extract but mission accomplished. This depth charge dry hop screen keeps everything from dispersing on top and using the agitator you can actually see the hop goodness spreading out into the beer. Perfect orange color as well. Now you can continue to talk amongst yourselves as I'm a little ferklempt! Cheers guys

    I stand convicted and apologize.

Is your screen this one for the big mouth bubbler? I have one similar in concept but it doesn't attach directly to the lid of my fermentor bucket, so I'll need to improvise that.

Glad this is working out for you

That's the very one. I live it.it comes in handy with fruit and spices as well. I hated bags and marbles and such. Too much of a hassle .

I suppose it is all relative but sanitizing a muslin bag/marbles is really not that different from sanitizing this contraption. And if your primary is a bucket the process is better in that a transfer to a secondary is unnecessary; the elimination of this transfer mitigates exposing the beer to air (oxygen).

Perhaps it is time again for my well worn saying: Brew the beers you like and brew them the way you like.

    Cheers!

Cool, that makes sense. What about refractometer readings? Any poodle argument there?

The more crud in your refractometer sample, the more fuzzy the reading will be. If you can't see a clear line in the scope, then all you can do is make an educated guess what the reading might be.

Listened. Credible. I think it's the enzymes. The coolest aspect for me was it stimulated my thinking about research questions outside of the beer world, at the intersection of plant physiology and evolutionary biology. Looks like a good podcast to add to the growing list.

This is not entirely true. Suspended particles impact specific gravity. In fact, one way to evaluate particle sizes in a heterogenous mixture is mix the particles thoroughly with water and monitor specific gravity while denser particles gradually fall out of solution. It's a common method for evaluating soil texture. If you put your poodles in a blender to create a suspension, the particles would eventually settle, but until they did, your specific gravity would be higher than that of water.

Intriguing. I wonder if it's still possible to teach this old poodle new tricks *points to self*.

turns our that although poodles were bred to be water dogs some of them can’t swim so you probably shouldn’t go around throwing poodles in pools. It’s fun throwing poodles in pools until one can’t swim
