That BrewJacket looks like such a sexy option, but the price kills it for me. Dang shame cause ive been waiting to brew my first batch of beer (liquid extract kit that came with my Midwest Supplies) but temperature control is going to be an issue. How effective is using copious amounts of ice in a small tub in controlling temp, considering that itll be unattended for a good portion of the day?

That should work just fine. You just need to monitor it regularly (a few times a day) and add (or replace) more ice when needed. Some folks use 2 liter soda bottles filled with water that they freeze/re-freeze as their ice source.

Needless to say but this method does not work well if you go away (business trip, vacation, etc.).

    Cheers!

My basement for 75% of the year should be fine, it's just a bit hot right now.

And by hot I mean 72 degrees ambient.

Pretty easy to maintain a fermentation temperature a few degrees cooler than 72 degrees via tubs and water (and ice if needed). I have noticed that even just placing my fermenter on my basement floor will cool things down 2-4 degrees; the basement floor acts like a heat sink.

    Cheers!
