The wife and I are going to be in Chicago between the 15th and the 17th and we (I) would really like to go to Three Floyd's. We won't have a car, so we need to either bum a ride or find public transport.

Do any of you have any ideas?

And please don't say "it's too difficult. just go someplace else" because I don't want to hear that.

If you plan on using a taxi from the train stations close to Three Floyds, call/arrange it ahead of time. I'd suggest calling the Hampton Inn in Munster for advice on specific cab/car services. If you plan on relying on public transit (ie. Metra/Amtrak out of Chicago and then Munster's bus system), allow for about 2 hours each way. I think, anyway -- I admittedly didn't seriously look into 100% public transit because it really is too difficult.

Or, take the Metra to Flossmoor Station and then bike to Munster. You can even rent bikes from Millennium Park, where the trains to Flossmoor depart!

I've heard of people biking there, although I've not done it myself.

Renting a car wouldn't work because I plan on doing more than just looking at the beer.

    The bike rental sounds tempting.

I'll look into these other options and tell you what I think.

    Thanks.

Be careful with a taxi. Not hard to find one going there, but pretty hard to get one coming back. I would take a taxi there, and pre-arrange a car service to take you back. It will be like $100-150, but not many other options.

Amtrack stop is about 6 miles from FFF I believe. So its walkable, but a bit long, but maybe there is something closer?

When you get here hire a babysitter. They work for about $8 per hour. Insist that they drive their own car, and explain that they will be babysitting you and your wife that evening. I'm sure you can find something like this on Craigslist.

sounds like you will be drunk enough to just curl up behind a bush and call it a night.

This is another reason why this site is awesome. Thanks to all who posted ideas. I have had the same dilemma.

Any idea what it would cost to take taxis between Hammond's Amtrack and the bar? I think I might go to the bar mid-day on my last day in the city and then head out on a six o'clockish train to South Bend.

Here is something interesting. These guys only charge around $1.25 per person and they seem to run between Hammond and Munster. It says that they will let you out anywhere along the route, and it looks like it goes really, really close to FFF. The Hammond Clinic marker near the bottom left on the map is basically right by the brew pub.

They go by some of the main train stops in the area, so it would be pretty easy to make the connection back into the city too.

Not sure, but it shouldn't cost too much since its only a few miles. It might be difficult to get cabs out there. Maybe try to call the cab company and have one waiting for you for the train arrives, and then call them like an hour before you want to leave FFF and have them send one.

The best train option is probably the South Shore. The Amtrak might seem like a good idea, but it comes into this little hut on the side of the tracks in Dyer near... ...nothing. Also, I don't know how you would get back since the trains aren't very often. You're much more likely to get some cab to pick you up in Hammond or East Chicago. Personally, I prefer the East Chicago station. It's in a more industrial, less residential/downtown area, and I think it seems safer.

The local buses (EasyGo) only work if you want to be at Floyds during the bus hours. Last I checked they stop running fairly early by drinking standards (8:30pm or something??). Also, keep track that they keep running come July because of problems that are happening with funding locally.

FYI, cabs are not easy to come by. I've heard over & over that even calling in advance leads to a really long wait and a rather high fare. You might be better off looking into the car service idea. Oh and the Tri-State Coach idea doesn't get you that much closer to the pub. You'd still need a cab or something. Bikes seem iffy to me because I drive the Flossmoor to Floyds route fairly often and I wouldn't feel that safe riding on the roads. But again, that's me.

I would suggest a mid-day visit via a rental car. One person not getting completely hammered. Wandering around one of the parks near the pub to sober up for a while after having lunch. Then heading back in your car.

Now, if the state of Indiana would just help the people up her in the NW corner out this could be fixed. There is a potential train line that would stop in Munster in the industrial park just to the north of Floyds. But the funding end of that isn't going well.

I wonder if cops are assholes there...enough to give you a biking under the influence on your way back from the pub. It happened to my friend but this was down in Miami, FL.
