Love em, pricy but everyone I've had has been damn good, you decide if $30 good. I'd say the 20 EC is fabulous, as good a BA brew as I've had.

It is? BCBS and it's variants are nowhere near that. FW is half that price. KBS is nowhere near that (unless you are getting seriously gouged). There are many BA release significantly cheaper than $30 a bottle.

I agree, but I don't think there are ally of people that are willing to pay for it. These things stagnate on shelves. I can probably get you any distro'd variety from 2012 or 2013 right now. A store I frequent has an enormous row of shelves dedicated to these. Oh, they're $25 too

I think most large format bottle (22oz, 750ml) barrel aged releases are all at or over the $20 mark, especially when talking brewery only releases. BC variants were $20, and sure, high volume stuff like FW (3.5K cases) will be an exception at $17. Every barrel aged Lost Abbey 375ml bottle goes for $16. Don't even need to mention the 3F stuff. I get what you're saying and you certainly bring up valid examples, but I still feel like we're heading toward a higher price average for large format BA bottle releases.

Where I'm at, all the FW boxed beers have been $14.99, so even $17 seems kind of high, and $30+ for a beer seems pretty ludicrous to me. However, I always read these Fifty-Fifty threads so I can live vicariously through those that ARE willing to pay those prices...

A few years ago a bunch of Denver BA's actually amassed all of the current Eclipse 50/50's. While all of them were "good" it became pretty tough to justify the cost of them next to numerous other BA stouts that are 1/2 that price or less.
The exception would be if you have a specific affinity for a certain spirit/barrel.

look, just drop $30 one time on a bottle of evan williams or Elijah Craig and then write back. None of this "living vicariously" through people who just sucked it up and bought a bottle. Its just one bottle, man! come on!

better how? Which ones? Of course this is all subjective. My take is that the Eclipse series beers hand the EC in particular have a much stronger and tastier than typical barrel influence. The beer itself is perhaps a little thinner than others.

That is exactly the kind of attitude that gets you in trouble. Dont give in to the temptation because if you do, you try one of them and then end up loving it. Then curiosity kills you and you just gotta know if the others are that good and if there really is that much of a difference between the barrel treatments.

Next you know, its 3 years later and you literally traded away cases of amazing beers and spent hundreds of dollars to amass 1 of every variation ever released. Then you have some friends come over to assist you in drinking them all side by side. 4 hours later, you forget/are too drunk to even know what you are doing anymore and you end up pooping in a dumpster.

    Your mileage may vary.

I buy 6-8 bottles a year now. Zero regrets.

I don't have to worry about dropping cash on one of these, anyway, because I haven't seen any Fifty-Fifty bottles on the shelves of any stores I frequent for about 2 years now... So for the time being, I'll enjoy others' experiences with these beers.

Don't get me wrong, it was a damn tasty beer, and if we got it around my way I would definitely pick it up every once in awhile. Maybe saying "many" beers are better is a bit misleading. I had several beers throughout this past weekend with some friends which everyone agreed were better, but it was an all-star line-up and probably skewed my thoughts on it. Those other beers included FW XVI, Founders CBS, AleSmith BA Speedway, GI Proprietor's Reserve, and CCB Double Barrel Hunahpu.

I really didn't feel that White/Purple/Orange variants tasted like 30$. I mean they were good, but I could easily find something for much cheaper that taste wayyyy better. Just because it was aged in an Elijah Craig barrel doesn't mean they did it perfectly. Also I'd expect a much bigger beer for the price, ie. 12%+ ABV than the 9.5%.

I had last year's High West Rye just about 6 weeks ago and I have to say I came away very impressed, one of the best beers I've had all year so far. If you have the disposable income, I definitely recommend it. The java one sounds like it would be very good, too.

I have the Pappy Van Winkle one, has anyone tried this yet? If you have, how does it compare to others?
