I purchased a bottle of Eclipse (Copper Wax) 2011 - bottle #55, about a year ago. I aged the bottle in complete darkness between 55 - 60 deg F and saved to enjoy for a special occasion. I opened for my daughter's birthday ...and it was completely without carbonation - entirely flat.

I emailed "[email protected]" and this was the response:

    --------------------
"There were two runs of Grand Cru in 2011, both of which have been tested after release, and neither run was completely flat in our testing. This style is intentionally bottled at a lower combination as it is better suited to the flavors melding, and the overall presentation of this style. Given that it was a 2011, it could be possible that it was stored improperly, though the bottle wax should also prevent any CO2 loss.
I am sorry that the experience was not what you were hoping. I can attest that the Grand Cru is the lowest carbed of all our styles (intentionally), but it certainly should not be flat."
    --------------------

Before I "invest" in another bottle, I would like to know if this is an isolated occurrence. I would prefer not to gamble. I mean, heck I can pick up a case of great beer for the price of a single bottle of FiftyFifty.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

I've had the purple, white and black with no issues. The Evan Williams(Black) had the lowest carbonation of the 3.

I've personally had a lot of bottles from last year, and all were carbonated just fine.

Had plenty of 2011 bottles with no flatness.

I would not, however, advise aging this particular series, but that's just my view.

Both 2009 bottles of the EC that had "lower carbonation". I don't remember any of them being particularly carbonated, but it did help make the mouthfeel seem heavier.

You're probably better off just buying BCBS. At least you know exactly what you're getting.

    I've never experienced that.

Thank you all for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Re: BCBS - been a fan of that since first sip in '06. Love it and it's been amazingly consistant throughout the years (even through the changes in mgmt). No worries there - I have an '09 bottle in the cellar.
