Agree the shelf price is a bit stinging, but you can't drink an Eclipse and expect it to compare to a Parabola, BCBS or BT. If the folks at 50/50 wanted to brew a ultra-boozy malt bomb, I'm sure Todd would have no problem accomplishing that. They're mission was to brew a more subtle, well balanced drinkable bourbon barrel aged stout for which they have been successsful.

If I pay double the cost of a Parabola or 3x the cost of a BCBS, I would expect it to at least be in the same ballpark as those in terms of perceived quality. Obviously it won't be an identical beverage, but I shouldn't be left wondering where my extra $15 went (the wax?). It's not bad by any means, but I can't figure out why a bomber would be more than $15.

They should be selling it in 4 packs of 12oz bottles, each 4 pack with 4 different variants, for around $30 (which would still be overpriced)

I just purchased my first bottle ever for $32. Drove out to Armonk, NY to search for something else bc CT's distro is very shitty. Anyway, stumbled upon this and a few of the other variants and just grabbed the lime green wax 2013. I've always wanted to try this beer and sometimes I don't mind splurging on things that I will more than likely never get my hands on. I think spending the money every once in a while is worth it if it is something you are seeking.

Asking others is tough, it really is all up to how much it's worth to you to try. Good luck and I hope we both enjoy it.

We don't get it here, but I'd like to try it once. Hard to justify when I could get a 4-pack of BCBS and a 4-pack of Backwoods Bastard for the same price.

I hope so. I've never tried it, but I bought and sent a bottle to a guy I've traded with in the past.

I think the fact that 2012 Eclipse varieties is still on the shelves here in Chicago in quanity speaks volumes on whether or not it is overpriced.

well, i was hoping to get feedback on this, and you have delivered, in spades. kudos beer advocates

i'm still no closer to my answer, but i appreciate the feedback

i guess i just got excited since a store near me has it on the shelf (quite a few varieties). i've been burned in the past buying something blindly though. but, that's beer. it does seem to me though, at 9.5 percent, it better be really fucking good at that price.

i have a pretty generous beer budget too. the money is not the issue. it's the principle. it does seem like most people here think it's overpriced.

but, i am curious..... i might just buy one (probably the EC) just to satisfy my own curiosity

    Wow I guess so :astonished:

It's because I've tried so many superior beers for under $30 between then and now

I would recommend buying one and trying it. It's definitely worth trying at least once...regardless of the outcome you can chalk it up to experience. I don't regret the one I tried...I enjoyed it, but I just think it was too expensive

In one word.....no. But I admit I have climbed aboard the hype train the last few years (wife not sharing my happiness) and gotten mine in the $20-23 range during the futures sales. I did buy some this year as well, but right now I am drinking a Moylan's Imperial Stout which was barrel aged for 6 months and it's awesome. And only $10 per bottle. Would I buy three of these instead of one Eclipse. Yes. Almost two Parabola's instead? No question. But....if you haven't tried one, why not go for it? A lot of the futures have a somewhat-the-same taste based on the stout used, but the majority of the time (imo), the experience is a nice one. $30 nice? That's debatable. I did drink an Elijah Craig with three years on it and it blew me away. Also, I had a 2011 Grand Cru fresh and didn't enjoy it too much.....a year and a half later? Sublime.

I beer is worth what someone pays for it. Goose Island gets 22 bucks a four pack for their beer, and eclipse sees their 22oz'ers for 30 bucks...yeah, sucks it is so high, but that is what the market is.

I got 48oz of BCBS this year for $20. After trying both I will never buy a bottle of Eclipse myself. Even if I lived in a state that it was distributed to.

I had the Elijah Craig variant last year, and yes it was good. Good, but I would not buy it again, and there is TONS of it from last year around me. I guess I wasn't the only one that felt it was overpriced. Good beer to try, but there is no way in hell I would buy all the variants to try.

There's better BA stouts at better prices. BCBS is only like 23 a four pack, and blows Eclipse out of the water.

Special occasion/holiday is always the exception to the price rule. Enjoy it!

I've had 2011 Brewmaster's Grand Cru Blend, 2011 Four Roses, and 2012 Elijah Craig (12 year). To me, none of them are worth the $30+ pricing. The cost to produce them may warrant that price, but to me, the taste doesn't warrant more than $15 - $18 per bottle.

I was at the release and was surprised to find out the Java was sold to me for $32 when a liquor store in NY was selling for $26. Seems kinda odd given they mentioned it was discounted, but actually not. By the way, the Vanilla Eclipse was amazing.. A definite ISO!!
