True - was there a few weeks ago and their GABF gold medal winner, Monterey St. Pale Ale, was solid ... plus I totally dig the taster contraption they rigged up, very cool

I've got a lot of respect for Fig Mt, they brew a lot of boring European styles, but do it really well. Their collab with Beachwood You're Such a Dort is awesome and I recently had their 5th Anniversary Dopplebock and that was really great too. Not a brewery I go out of my way for, but if I want a nice kolsch or lager, they do it right.

Didn't this exact pattern get posted a few months back? Somebody raving about Fig Mountain and saying how bad Firestone is? I swear this is a repeat troll.

Because there couldn't be more than one person with that opinion, right? I'd like to see that thread if anyone finds it.

I didn't realize beer snobs (I say that in a completely positive way) had moved so far away from traditional style beer.

My big problem with Fig Mountain is that they have no AC in their Buellton location and, after a long session at Barrelworks, I need a refreshing beer and some AC. Fig Mountain has neither.

I see they are expanding yet again, this time in the extreme western end of the San Fernando Valley. Their new taproom opens in a week. I may check it out.

Never really been impressed with their beers and keep wondering how they are expanding.

I wonder if they're the next brewery up for a buyout?

Let's just consider "extreme western end of the SFV" as a typo and what he meant was "extreme western end of LA County". Good, that's settled.

In regards to beer, Fig Mountain makes generally solid beer. I just think they got into the game of expanding with brewery company stores early, similarly to what Smog City is now doing in Long Beach (and Stone has done for a long time). This will be their 3rd (?) satellite taproom open for tastings and growler fills if I'm not mistaken. I can't fault a brewery for trying to get it's beer into the hands of more locals and increasing access to well priced growler fills.

Westlake, Los Olivos, Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande, Santa Barbara are currently open. Plans for Orcutt, Nipomo, and San Luis are in the works too.

I've heard rumblings in the beer world that a certain large brewery may have a hand in their new "expansions." Odd to me that this brewery has so much disposable income they can continue to build these tasting rooms. Time will tell

i've never been blown away by anything, but have enjoyed some of their IPAs. also a friend is now brewing for them so i will continue to support them and try what's new (as long as someone else is driving after Barrelworks)

Try skipping Barrelworks and just hit the regular bar at Firestone.

Santa Maria Brewing Co. They make average and uninspired beer too. Calling them "average" may be too much of a compliment though.

To be fair, fresh Lizard's Mouth is pretty damn good.

Yeah, I bought two bottles from their Liquamentum series (Double Down Davy Brown and Hell's Half Acre); both were either infected, or just really terrible. I consider FM something of a hometown (adopted) brewery, which I'd try to support, but I literally never buy their stuff. Too many other better options, local and otherwise.

    same.

On tap and growler was great, bottled was... meh. I sort of think of them as sort of a Bootlegers + level. They crank out decent things, but it sort of all gets muddled together.
