Hi all, my friends and I just planned a trip to Philly for late February. Before we pick a hotel, I was wondering what areas of the city have the best beer seen? Are the best beer bars even located around one general area, or are they dispersed amongst the city. I'd love to get to Monk's cafe. Any suggestions on areas where beer enthusiasts should focus in Philly would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any other suggestions on placed to get beer or restaurants with great food and beer would be appreciated.

Finally, does the Yard's brewery do tours? Are they worth checking out?

You have to go to Tap House in University City...they have a great selection on Tap and the food is great. Also checkout Beer Heaven if you are looking to buy bottles and bring back. They have a great selection, and from West Coast breweries like Russian River, the Bruery and others.

EDIT: Looks like one of my friends pulled the trigger on a hotel already. No worries though because it's a half mile from Monk's Cafe. Yay! Any other beer bars to check out there?

Also, I am taking the train down, so I can lug back a shitload of brew. What are some of the breweries I should keep an eye out for?

Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods. The selection of craft beer is excellent in several of the city’s neighborhoods:

Center City: Monks, Jose Pistolas, Nodding Head, etc.
Old City: Irish-Pol, Khyber Pass. Triumph, Eulogy, Triumph Brewpub, etc
Northern Liberties: Standard Tap, Abbaye, etc.
Fishtown: Kraftwork, Johnny Brendas, Memphis, etc.
University City (West Philly): Local 44, City Tap House, etc
Art Museum Area: The Belgian Café, Bishops Collar, London Grill, Brigids, etc.

    Doh! I forgot South Philly!:grimacing:

And then there are outlying neighborhoods of Manayunk, Chestnut Hill/West Mount Airy, etc.

You would almost have to work hard to not find good beer in Philly.

    Cheers!

Good local craft breweries are: Sly Fox, Troegs, Yards, and some others that I think you can get in RI (Victory, Weyerbacher, Stoudts, etc,)

The Philly area gets some beers from breweries which are likely not available in RI: Russian River, Firestone Walker, Bells, New Holland, etc.

If you are going to South Philly I would recommend Devils Den (1/2 off drafts M-F 5-7pm) and P.O.P.E.
Even further south is South Philly Tap Room.

Growlers and Bainbridge Street Barrel House are fairly new, but decent places for beer. Food is OK.

    Obligatory phillytapfinder.com mention as well.

We get some Troegs and some Yard's, but I know where missing out on a lot of their stuff. Bells we do not get, so I may have to fill a box with their goods when we are there. Would I be able to find Pliny on the shelves down there? All the "-lications" from RR aren't that interesting to me, but Pliny surely is.

No Pliny or Blind Pig bottles, but you might luck out and find it on draft while you're here. Monk's often has it, as does Hawthorne's, which is walking distance away. $25 Growler fills of Pliny when they had it last week.

“Would I be able to find Pliny on the shelves down there?” Pliny is a draft only beer in Philly. I suppose you could try to get a growler of it?

    Cheers!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know no Pliny bottles come to Philly just draft.
Check Philly Tapfinder (http://phillytapfinder.com/) when you are here, it may be on tap somewhere.
It pops up occasionally. For example, in the Philly area but not in the city itself, Iron Abbey had it on last week.

Not sure if Hopslam will last till late February (I havent sought after it yet), but it would be a nice alternative to Pliny.

It's not terribly hard to find Pliny on-tap somewhere in the city. It shows up pretty regularly. Hopefully your timing is good and it's on somewhere. As others have mentioned though, you aren't going to find bottles of it for sale anywhere.

I was lucky enough to have Hopslam before and would love to grab some of it. The stuff I had was in late February too and I thought it was awesome.

On tap Pliny, check. If I can get a Growler that'd be awesome. I could see myself heading to the bathroom on the Amtrak with that jug in my back pack a few times on the ride home. Ha ha ha.

I think Nugget Nectar should be kicking around at that point. I would recommend trying to find it on cask if available this year.

Looks like late January distribution to PA.

Also a side note, PA (Especially Phila) bottle shops prices are a lot higher than most places. So theres that...haha.
