I have never really been a big fan of their beers. The only one I have liked was the one with the Iron Maiden font (the IPA). Interesting article; very surprised that they are in so many states. http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/food/ct-finch-brewery-chicago-20141212-story.html
Who drinks this brewery's beer? Their vanilla stout was not great even as a gifted 4pack from my mother scouring clearance grocery beer sections because apparently she loves me.
I don't recall which, but I'm nearly certain their biggest market is either Virginia or the Atlanta area. Having been told that, the large, destination style brewery in Chicago was a big surprise to me. Here's a quote from Ben Finch (a guy who really seems to stay in the shadows), "In Atlanta, they’re like, “We can’t get this, we can’t get that; you guys get this, you guys get that.” People here don’t even realize how spoiled we are. We have the best selection in the Midwest in Chicago, it compares to a Philadelphia or New York or Boston. Chicago is on that level in my opinion." Clever tactic, to supply an "under served" market with something in a slightly unique format with colorful graphics from the distant metropolis that is Chicago. If I used family money to build a big brewery and Chicago folks weren't purchasing, my Dad would sure tell me to push it elsewhere.
I dont drink their beers but I have nothing against a successful brewery. If they are selling well, I have no right to knock them.
Yeah, I don't drink the beer very often, but I have enjoyed a few. Many people just get put off because his pop bankrolled it. You need money to start a brewery, so what if it comes from family. Or not focusing on local, that's fine too. The thing I find most annoying about finches is how annoying the twitter account is.
I know one of the brothers and he's super nice and I hope they do and keeping doing well, even if it is primarily outside of their home market. I think their Secret Stache is pretty delicious for a low ABV, high flavor milk stout. And the Hardcore Chimera that just recently came out really surprised me for how good it is, though I have had some variation from batch to batch. I just hope they get their barrel aging program more on point, i.e. not infecting every batch. Yet another beer stop for me when I visit home.
I'm a fan of their Vanilla Porter, although it goes south fairly fast. Their IPA didn't really do anything for me.
I hope linking to Chicago Tribune articles is allowed here. Josh Noel writes some of their best beer-related articles, and he wrote one that I enjoyed about the proposed Finch expansion. Link. I still just really don't get it. Hardcore beer geeks and jaded folk like myself aren't their target audience, but is the general, less nerdy public interested in this sort of thing? If I can make some friends I'll try to ask them.
Maybe it shows how under developed I am as a beer drinker, but I love these guys. First beer I had from them was a Fascist Pig and I loved it. Loved everything I tried from them...
