When DFH was being pulled from Wisconsin (basically the point I began drinking Craft beer) I was able to snag two '07 bottles of Raison D'Extra and WWS. I cannot say I knew better when I was drinking them, but looking back I was damn fortunate to get those at a local liquor store without knowing any better.

I will take a chance or two nowadays because of that experience.

Loaded question. Depends on the beer and the style. I spent the better part of the first half of 2011 raiding a vintage beer attic at one of my local places and found some incredible brews. I also left behind dozens of cases of brews I didn't think were worthy of going the distance. If it's an imperial stout, barleywine, lambic, old ale, belgian strong ale or quad, I'm in. I'll even take a chance on a wheat wine, imperial porter, saison or tripel. Most other styles, I'd have to research the beer reviews for the specific beer before buying.

    I wouldn't buy a 3 year old oatmeal stout...but that's me...some people enjoy stouts that get chalky.

My style list above is just my guideline...it doesn't work all the time, so if you're unsure, buy one, drink it, if good, buy the rest.

I know exactly which bottles you are talking about. I been going to that place for 3 years and they have been on top of that shelf near the glass door since then. Good luck.

I would only buy beer that I would consider aging myself. I won't buy old beer just because it has already been aged for me.

I bought a 2008 Old Guardian not too long ago right off the shelf with other Stone beers. It was tasty.

Just drank my last '08 this week and it had passed its peak. I wouldn't hold onto that four pack much longer. Still delicious, but I found I like Ten Fidy best with about 1 year on it.

I found an Arcadia's "Big Dick's Old Ale" in a 22oz bottle from 2007 just a few weeks ago.

I wasn't sure how it would be holding up, but for $5 why the hell not.....

Depends on what it is and the price. Also, depends if it's something that's still available or was it a one time brew/been discontinued. There are a few bottle shops I frequent and know what's perpetually in stock/fresh. That being said, if traveling out of town, I might take a risk on something unusual/unavailable. When in doubt, ask the workers.

Yes. Developed this habit with cigars. Found a 4-pack of GUBNA for $5.99 earlier today...guessing it was canned in the Spring...can't wait to try it.

I love finding older stouts and Belgians. Pre-aged beer sold at a discount can be awesome.
