Firestone Wookie Jack age question?

    Finally got around to trying Wookie Jack today. Thought it was pretty good, but then towards the end I saw the bottled on date: 10/19/12. So my question is: did I experience a true WJ, or did I lose a lot of the hop profile due to age?

    While I haven't had one that old, I'd say WJ is one of the few hoppy beers I don't mind with a little age on it. Yes, it definitely loses a good amount of its hop profile, but there's a lot of other things going on with that beer to keep it interesting and/or tasty. Go grab another old bottle and then hunt a fresh one for a side by side and report back!

    It's going to be fine with some age, but it's not going to taste how it should. You'll lose some of the complexity from the hops. It's been a while since I've had a WJ b/c FW is damn near impossible to find fresh in NJ. But from what I remember, you get some really nice grassy/piney hop flavors up front, and you'll be missing that.

    While I've not had Wookie Jack at that age, some years back I did have a couple of cases of Sublimely Self Righteous Ale (then the Stone 11th Anniversary beer). Based on my experience with that beer as it aged is that what you've lost since the beer was bottled is the bitterness of the hops but there will still be some of the hop flavors and some bitterness from the dark roasted malt. The Stone 11th Anniversary didn't improve or decline with age, it just changed but was still good.

    Based on that experience I'd expect your Wookie Jack to have been pretty good but more focused on the dark roasted malt as a source of bitterness and with the hop flavors in there as well.

    Thanks for the replies. I definitely agree with drtth that there was more of the dark roasted malt up front. I am going to try to get another bottle of the old from my local shop and try to hunt down a fresh one from my local shop. I'll report back with results. The tough part will be getting a fresh one. Firestone is tricky to find around me as well.
