I was 15 years old on vacation in the British Virgin Islands when I ordered a Carib at a bar. Of course there was a lime that I pushed into the bottle and, when I took a sip, the beer foamed over making a bit of a mess on the table and floor. I'll never forget it.

I too enjoyed my first legal beer in Hickory. I went to Thee Dollhouse, and I am sure I had Bud Light or something similarly awful.

While I wasn't getting served myself, I was certainly sitting in bars and having a pint by 13/14. Harp, Carlsberg, Carling - one of those I assume.

And I was a regular on a Friday and Saturday night at the pub by my 16th birthday. UK licencing laws are so much more sensible that those in the US, and, at the time, much less stringently enforced.

Legal age was 18 in my day and everyone (mostly) drank before that. I must be a "cereal" criminal, because we had many a beer in bars before 18. Smutty Robust Porter is an auspicious first!

At 17 years old I had Sierra Nevada Brown Ale at Schooners in Cayucos. It was July 4th and I had a girl press her stamp onto my wrist to get in. Don't think I've seen Sierra Nevada Brown since.

Given my location, that isn't really a surprise. I still drink it occasionally.

My first was probably a Carlsberg or Nurslund Guld in Scandanavia when I went before I was 21. But my first beer in an American bar is actually a decent story.

In college I used to intern with a bunch of other college aged kids in DC over the summers. I was 20 my first summer. I'm nearly 30 now and still get IDed at about a 95% clip at restaurants so you can imagine how young I looked back then. About half our group was over 21 and half was under. Our boss would take out all the interns every month for a staff team building dinner. Our first team building dinner was the second night so I didn't know how cool the boss was or wasn't. We went to a Mexican place near our work. I was the first to order so I ordered just a water. Then our boss orders a margarita and everyone who orders after me orders an adult beverage of some kind and no one gets IDed. I feel like I've made a terrible mistake. Where I go to college everyone gets carded. I guess this isn't a practice in DC. But I feel like if I switch to beer now it will look suspicious.

The second staff dinner rolls around and we go to a different Mexican restaurant in DC. They go around and take drink orders. I'm last and several underage people ordered before me without getting carded. I'm feeling great. I order my Pacifico like it's no big deal. The waiter looks at me and says can I see some ID? I'm screwed. Or am I? The waiter was foreign. It's DC so they must see IDs from hundreds of countries and every state. My ID said "21 in 21 in 2005" which was the current year. I calmly pull out my license and hand it to him. He stares at it puzzled for a minute. Says "OK" and hands it back. It was a great Pacifico that day.
