First beer ever listed on BeerAdvocate?

    Found myself bored one day looking at random BA stuff, which actually happens a lot haha. I became interested in trying to find the earliest date for a listed beer. There are a lot of summer/fall 2001 beers listed but nothing earlier than that. After about 20 minutes I moved on to more 'important' things in my life.
    Anyway today I just so happened to stumble across Fred- Hair of the Dog. The date listed for this beer is entered as 8-13-1998. Which is a full three years earlier than anything else I found.

    My question is if anyone knows what is the first beer entered on this site? Or knows one that is earlier than Fred. Partly out of pure curiosity and partly I would like to see how it all got started on this site....

    Interesting question...I wonder if the founders started the site by listing a bunch of beers? It would seem like it would have been tough to start with zero beers in the database...i am guessing someone will have the answer to this question.

    Yeah the name shown for entering Fred is Beeradvocate. So Im thinking you would be correct. I did a search of a bunch of New England beers thinking that would lead me to something, since that's where the brothers are from (I think).

    Thanks Jason. Wonder if you can remember that moment. At the time I'm sure it didn't seem that special. But now looking at how far the site has come, I would say it is a rather big moment.

    Keep in mind we were both reviewing beers starting in 1996 on Brewguide.com which eventually switched over to BeerAdvocate ... I think by early 1998 we had 100+ beer reviews.

    I do. I was in Northampton, Mass at a now closed restaurant on the corner of Pearl and Main and wrote the review on a bar napkin, which would later be uploaded from my Linux machine to our website using custom shell scripts over a 3429 baud dial-up modem during a time when only 1.3% of the world's population had Internet access.
