Why stop there? Why not just pour a shot of Guinness into a bottle of Jameson and insert a straw?

Wait, you're supposed to add 3 fifths of whiskey to your beers? My saison is fucked then. I didn't add any. Might as well drainpour it now.

To the OP: In regards to your question about blowoff tubes (if you haven't been scared off yet). I only use a blowoff tube if the vessel I'm fermenting in is not large enough to house the violent fermentation. For example, you can't put a 5gal batch in a 5gal carboy and cap it with an airlock for primary fermentation, you will always need a blowoff tube. However, you can put a 5gal batch in a 6.5gal fermenter and you'll be just fine with an airlock.

Also, I would recommend filling your bucket that houses the other end of the blow off tube with sanitizing solution as opposed to water.

Maybe I should retract my statements because I was cussing, but come on. When someone asks for help there's no need to treat them like a rookie. I've been brewing for a while with other friends setups so I understand "the basics". This is something I would like to further pursue in life so I started tweaking with recipes and had a blowoff problem for trying to squeeze a 5 gallon batch of ipa into a 6 gallon primary instead of a 6.5. I had never made a blowoff tube before so I just needed confirmation that what I was doing is right. Sorry for offending anyone about my comments, I was obviously frustrated at the time and took it out on the board.

As far as adding spirits goes, I couldn't find much information online about it. I was shocked when I found out that the recipe called for the whole fifth, but I figured if I asked on this forum I could get a solid answer. Which aside from the sarcastic comments were resoundingly pretty good. I'm gonna go with 10-15 ounces of the Bourbon. It's a strong beer and I like strong stouts and love the taste of real Kentucky Bourbon. So I think it should work out for me

    Thanks

No one knew what level of brewer you were. By reading your post it came across as a new brewer. Your questions were something a rookie would ask. There's no harm in being new at brewing and have questions.

You wanted a solid answer and got one. Adding plain bourbon to your beer in that amount is a bad idea. You didn't like it so do as you please then. No need to get brash with the folks helping.

Assuming your extract brewer and new and wanting to do a big stout and then add alcohol isn't something most people around here would suggest. It'll be an expensive mistake on your part but an obvious good learning experience on what not to do.

Your original posts reads like your asking us if it would be ok to add up to a 1/5 of whiskey to your Irish Red. We replied as we did, because that would be a horrible idea.

When you label the thread, "First Brew", it is safely assumed that you indeed are a rookie.

If you don't want to be misunderstood, you should express yourself more concisely my friend.

Seriously though, I'm glad you backed off the ledge on using a fifth in your stout. Now I'd recommend adding to taste, and not just adding 10-15 ounces arbitrarily.

I am so glad to be part of this community, long time ago, cos I find people here extremely worthy.Maybe what I see here might be the big difference between first and third world.... education. If someone has mistreated the people eager to help in this forum ( in my country) like this guy has done , everybody would have insulted him and nobody would have posted anything helpful .

That is a lesson ... . I am glad this kind of people still exist.
