I believe it's been "noob" since the beginning of time.

Now you know it can't be THAT easy, don't you? Someone will always dissect your words here to prove a 'point.' And I use the word 'point' very loosely.

If you eat at a restaurant that has a fantastic dish, do you not suggest to your friends that they try it? How about if you see an awesome movie? Seems silly that if you enjoy a particular beer you wouldn't want to suggest others give it a go.

I gave a 50-something Bud Light drinker a shot glass of Hoptimum. He said it 'tasted like liquor'. And that 'ONE of your beers would get me drunk!'

I turned my father-in-law onto Barrel Aged barleywines mostly (and some stouts/porters like BBPt5 etc) and he's hooked.

Now every time he comes over to have dinner, or watch football, etc... my cellar takes a beating, because I let him grab any bottle that strikes his fancy. I had 4-5 bottles of Abacus and 1-2 Sucaba at one time.... now I have none.

I have nothin against BMC or the people who drink it, I even drink it myself when I'm fishing or mowing the lawn. I also don't preach beer at parties, but it's nice when someone takes an interest in the good stuuf, and actually likes it. A lot of macro only folks won't even try scary beery tasting beer, and that's fine with me. For years all I drank was bL and newcastle.

So if he didn't use the word "conversion" or "convert" you would be okay with it?

If someone never has the opportunity to try better beer, they may never know - he shared good beer and someone else liked it. It's not just beer to us on BA anyway - it's, for lack of a better term, a hobby. It's nice to turn people on to the same interests as you.

While I don't love the term "converting", sharing something you enjoy with friends, relatives and the odd/random friend of a friend is a good thing. It's a way of making connections with others and isn't that social aspect a big reason we drink?

I don't think of it as converting either, but an opportunity to share and maybe educate someone that there's other things available. Thanksgiving Day - my son works for a liquor store and brought us one bottle of Ovila Quad to share. My brother in law asked what it was and son told him it was a brew by Sierra Nevada, explained the concept and what it is. BIL says I hate that Sierra Nevada stuff, so OK fine by me. Then he tasted it and pretty much finished up the bottle. Do I declare victory and claim a convert? No, but it was nice to see somebody taste, "get it" , and enjoy something he would not have tried otherwise, sharing skills aside ;-)

And it is great to see somebody with an open mind getting into the scene - the original story is SO cool in that respect and it sounds like a great time was had by all. What it's all about in the first place.
