The distributors/wholesalers are complicit in this stuff, too. The involuntary three-tier system provides the backbone for this kind of legislation.

Without mass amounts of money, I wonder what we can really do. Clearly the only way to kill small, local business is with mass quantities of money. These are going to pop up everywhere.

You can stop bills without money by:
    1. Shining a spotlight on the issue
    2. Sharing the news with everyone you know who will care. This is one time where facebook is actually beneficial to life.
    3. Calling your senators and voicing your concerns repeatadly
    4. Staying up to date with the bills. The bill has already passed the house and it's companion is being considered in the senate.

The bill numbers are S 1230 and H 5153, and are extremely progressive in regards to the craft beer industry. Basically:
    • It will increase the amount of beer that a brewpub can change from 2,000 barrels per year to 500,000 barrels per year so as to accommodate large breweries with restaurants.
    • Like breweries, it will allow for sales to wholesalers and exporters of kegs, cans, and bottles.
    • It will allow bottles and cans to be sold on site. Currently, only bottles are allowed. Although, nobody does this.
    • It keeps the current rules in place for on-site consumption. Meaning, there’s no limit like the Pint Law.
This will go a long way to attracting new breweries and bolstering existing ones with a brewpub.
You can see the bills here: http://www.scstatehouse.gov/query.p...557892&result_pos=0&keyval=1201230&numrows=10
(It also shows H 3512 which seems to be just a definition clarification bill)

You can track the bills I believe, by using the track button on the right side, but SC is lame and forces you to create a free account which I'm not going to do since I'm not a constituent of SC.

It's a pain in the ass to stay up to date with this stuff, but it should matter to you if you care enough about how it will affect your lives. This isn't as bad as what they tried to do to FL, they are trying to stop a progressive bill. In our case they inserted a poison pill into something as simple as getting 64oz growlers legalized, we fought it hard, the breweries came out, spotlights were shined on it over and over and we got the fucking bill killed.

I never thought beer would get me into politics but don't fuck with my fucking beer.

Damn! That ruined my Shock Top and Cheerios! Honestly, when matters get "legal" and public, true colors cannot hide behind double talk. Bombard the legislators with emails, phone calls, and letters continually. It worked in North Carolina with the Pop the Cap initiative. Good luck.

I will say that it seems progressive legislature is in the cards. First Pop the Cap in NC, now progressive beer legislature in FL, next is upping the ABV cap in Ohio to 21% (already in the works). Im sorry, 12% is a BS cap made back in the day.

you would be surprised how much "several thousand pissed off local citizens" can outweigh money. See the success of Free the Hops in Alabama for example.

If any SC BA's have the contact names/ph#/emails of those we should contact please post. There were many non-FL BA's that helped us here in FL this past legislative season. We'd like to help you. Let us know and we will.
