This illustrates the extent of my knowledge on the subject. Alright, here's a question: "Best (based on availability and affordability)" first real Trappist to try? I'm in the Midwest.

The top 3 are so awesome that its hard to compare. But I once had a rotten Rochefort and it sort of turned me off. I don't know what was wrong with the bottle, but it was just rank. I have another bottle and I'm gunna do a blind taste test Christmas Eve with Rochefort, Westvleteren and St Bernardus to see which one i really like the most

    Is Pannepot readily available?

IMO St. B > Rochefort, but not by much.

Only one produces a quad? Westvleteren, Rochefort, and La Trappe all have a quad. You are correct regarding dubbels and tripels. In fact, Orval only produces a Belgian pale ale.

Definitely the Rochefort 10 but at 8 bucks a bottle you might want to get some Three
Philosophers too since that's a great quad as well and is cheaper.

This is correct. Under BJCP guidelines, Quad doesn't exist, and Belgian Strong Dark ale does; and all of your Trappist Quads are listed as being fine examples of the style. In before everyone mows me down for using BJCP guidelines. The porter/stout rage thread rings a bell on that note.:astonished:

There is a definite difference. I've also heard that the term "quadrupel" is not used in Belgium, but I've never been there, so I can't personally confirm nor deny. Very simply a "quadrupel" is a higher abv dubbel. Belgian Strong Pale Ales and Belgian Strong Dark Ales are two different distinct styles.

EDIT: I recall the BJCP guidelines being referred to in the past. Those brews classified as "quads" have a heck of a lot more in common with dubbels than other brews considered as Belgian Strong Dark Ales.

Not in any order. Chimay Blue, St. Bernardus abt 12 and Rochefort 10. If you can get an Achel Extra get it as well. LaTrappe is a solid quad as well. Never had Pannepot, don't get it around here, but folks like it.

About a real Trappist brew? I'd suggest St. Bernarndus Abt 12, even though it isn't officially a Trappist brewery. In the past, St. Bernardus contracted with Westvleteren to brew Westvleteren 12. St. Bernardus Abt 12 is very similar to "Westy" 12 except for the yeast. My second recommendation would be Rochefort 10, a true Trappist brew.

Pannepot is truly awesome. You'd love it.

Yeah, dude, drink like 6 IPA's and 2 stouts then order yourself a La Trappe and it will blow your house off your face. But if your trying to keep your wallet somewhat intact, I would recommend not drinking good Quad's

Wrong answer! Trappist or College Degree. Monks are gonna win that fight 9.9 times out of 10, you can't argue that. It's just pure fact

Quad/Trappist style is a slippery slope, brother, human self control alone cannot resist it. That's all I'm saying.

Ahh, I thought you were saying that intelligence and faith are mutually incompatible, to which I may have had to agree.

*Edit* Man, am I gonna catch shit for that one.

That's not what I meant or implied but you can certainly take it that way.
