Went to the brew pub today for the first time, such an awesome spot for good brew and food! My friend and I witnessed a rather weird interaction though. A fellow attendee walked up to the doorman and asked if there were any growlers for sale. He mentioned he was from out-of-state and heard Three Floyds made great beer. The doorman replied that they were out of growlers but had plenty of six packs and bombers for sale, he also mentioned that the six packs were far cheaper than growlers. Upon hearing this the gentleman said "thanks anyway" and left. Guess that leaves more Zombie Dust for the rest of us to purchase.:astonished:

He probably wanted to pick up a growler of something that was on tap only and not bottled.

Do they not fill growlers that aren't their own?

    Ah...I love Michigan...

They won't refill their own growlers. You have to buy new glass every time.

That's probably why they're out of fucking growlers....

Seriously? They won't refill their own containers? He mentioned they can't do other brewery growlers so I assumed they would just want to keep their own glass in rotation. A new growler everytime seems like such a waste.

Not using other breweries growlers would be really lame, not using anything but new growlers is fucking stupid

Isn't a growler's purpose in life to be re-filled so that the brewery doesn't have to bottle beer for locals? I get your point, but you have to find this a strange practice as well....

Agree with Mordor, they pretty much just follow their own path and for the most part it works. I did like the atmosphere of the place and plan on returning when possible. Unless it is something unique to the brew pub though I will probably skip the growler fills. Does anyone know how much they charge? Is it based on the beer being served or is there a standard growler fill price?

They charge based on the beer being filled into the growler. I didn't bother asking how much a growler fill was, because they said two bombers are less expensive and you get more beer (dreadnaught) not sure about other beer costs or efficiencies.

This was touch upon in a thread about a year and a half ago. I agree with Three Floyds. Dude man travels from Ohio with a growler from Great Lakes Brewery. Drinks said growler while camping in Michigan City the night before. Gives it a quick rinse at the camp ground, thinking he's got a clean growler. Goes to Three Floyds, they fill the growler, he hops back into his VW Bug, drives back to Ohio, to find that the beer he drove 300 miles for isn't what he expected because he didn't properly clean the growler. Three Floyds is just bypassing such events happening, and getting their beer thrown under the bus on sites like this one.

Although, I do agree with the whole point of growlers is to be re-usable. But Three Floyds gonna do what they gonna do.

instead they're getting their business practices questioned.

i have no horse in this race, i've never been to the brewery and tried to fill a growler, I just think it's idiotic. You think they would want to make some more money.

It's bad logic. If that is all they are really worried about, all they have to do is have a policy that they only accept FFF growlers. This way when you bring in a used growler, they just take it from you and give you a new, clean one. That way they ensure their growlers are always clean, it saves an asston of money for the customer, and everyone is happy.

The only reason I can imagine they choose not to accept used growlers is that they can't be bothered to clean them out, and would rather just fuck over the customer by charging them absurd amounts for a new growler every time. They lose no money since in the end the customer is covering the cost of the growler, and they seemingly just do not care that it hurts their customers.

**Sorry I just want to say I love just about everything about FFF, but I have only once ever gotten a growler there and never tried to refill it. I just can't believe their policy is this terrible, and I cannot understand any reasoning behind it

Seems as though they make plenty of money...I don't think that is a concern.

Figure Eight in Valparaiso Indiana has a similar practice - they will sell you a new Growler every time but at least they credit you for the returned empty if you bring it in... also figure eight sells prefilled growlers at pat's in Porter so that's kind of unique. I really dig f8's raven tor, an oatmeal stout.

I need to make it down to FFF soon, lived in chicago for five years and never went... and now I only live about an hour west of the city.

it doesn't make much sense, but its really kind of a moot point anyway. as the employee said, its cheaper to buy bottles. and they only do growlers of 4 regulars (Alpha, P&J, Robert, GBH) and one non-regular (Dreadnaught, APW, ZD, etc.) which are limited by day.

my guess would be that they bottle more than they keg, and at the end of the day, its easier for the brewpub employees to sell/manage that way.

and as MordorMongo has said, no reason to question it. not going to change anything.
