So I've got two ounces of Citra in a nylon bag in my carboy. I weighed it down with what I thought was an appropriate amount of glass marbles (all I could find). When I stuffed it through the neck of the carboy it went straight to the bottom. Well now on day 2 it's floating around the top of the beer.

How much will this affect my aroma?

    Most likely a negligible amount.

As long as there is weight in the bag, the majority of the hops will be submersed in the beer and dry hopping should happen just fine (I think).

    Cheers!

Thanks fellas. Glad to hear. Next time I'll find a better way to keep it submerged.

Two ounces of Citra in 5(?) gallons? When (and where) does the party start?

No problem with your 2 ounces hanging around up top.
Getting a bag full of marbles and wet hops through a one inch glass jar...
Hey, good luck! We have been there.

What, too much or not enough. Since it's my first time dry hopping thought I'd just go with two.

Lol, thanks man. My plan was to just siphon to bottling bucket with the bag in there then worry about it later. Probably cut the top off of it to get the crud out.

been there too. one big drawback of glass carboys is trying to get that bag back out. I've been thinking about just throwing the dry hop (pellets) right in there and hoping that the cold-crash/gelatin fining will help everything go to the bottom. btw, i'm drinking an ipa with 8 oz hops total : 4 at various parts of the boil and 4 (incl 2oz citra) dry-hop. Its amazing. Cheers!

I've kind of stopped worrying about the whole sink/float ordeal.

I use pretty much only leaf to dry hop, and if I need pellets, or only have pellets, I'll add a little leaf of something else, as it keeps it all together better. Like a hop filter.

I DH in the keg though, with a mesh bag. Mine float. Sometimes I turn the keg upside down and let it ride for a couple days.

Never noticed any difference in aroma/flavor with the floaters v. sinkers.

Almost everyone wimps out and makes their first IPA with too little hops. Citra is potent, two ounces will shine, hop-heads will stalk you . . . IMO there is no such thing as too much hop aroma.

Next time just go find a rock from your garden...

But don't do that at all. Good luck getting it out of the carboy. I once ended up with a streak of hop-particles and beer across my ceiling after struggling with that.

I brewed an all Citra hopped IPA where I dry hopped with 1.5 ounces of Citra hops. When that batch was carbonated I did not enjoy that beer at all; the Citra aroma was overwhelming and unpleasant at that level. I purposefully aged that batch for about 3 weeks to get the hop aroma to diminish; the beer was tasty at that point in time.

    Different strokes for different folks.

    Cheers!

My hop schedule for this batch (a hoppy red FYI)
    60: Magnum
    10: Amarillo
    5: Simco
    0: Citra

    1oz each

Primary for three weeks, then 2oz Citra 7days at 64-65 degrees.

I considered making an all Citra beer but I'm not quite that adept at doing this yet. Figured that was a beer best left to someone who really knows what their doing.

I think there is a great probability that your beer will be wonderful! My personal experience via my solely hopped Citra IPA was that Citra hops are super potent. In other words, for my all Citra hopped IPA the amount of 1.5 ounces for dry hopping was overwhelming for me. You may greatly enjoy the combination of 1 ounce of Citra at the end of boil plus 2 ounces of Citra dry hopping. As a point of additional clarification I also added 1 ounce of Citra at the end of boil for my all Citra hopped IPA.

I will not provide advice that you 'tone down' the Citra hopping for your beer. I will provide a 'warning' that based upon the all Citra hopped IPA that I brewed and my personal palate that using a total of 3 ounces of Citra hops for aroma (end of boil plus dry hopping) can potentially be overwhelming.

    Cheers!

Have you tried using weights to keep the bag submerged fully and compared the results?

    Just askin'

Nope, the hops tend to sink after a couple of days as it is. I also double dry hop, once in the primary post fermentation and then again when I keg the beer.

As this is only my third batch (not counting the Mr. Beer batch I made in 1998) I'm taking all advice I can get. I've heard Citra can overpower a beer quickly. Thanks for the warnings...we'll see how she goes in a few days when I rack to bottling.
