Hi there, this will be my second batch and I'm brewing the Big Ben Pale Ale kit from midwest. I would like to use the first wort hopping technique along with the addition of extract later in the boil. Here are the ingredients that I'm using:
3.15 lbs. Gold liquid malt extract,3.15 lbs. Amber liquid malt extract,
8 oz. Carpals, 8 oz. Crystal 10L specialty grains,
1 oz. Willamette aprox. 5% AAU, 1 oz. Fuggle pellet hops aprox. 5% AAU

    My queries are this:
Any suggestions on how to first wort hop with extract and specialty grains? steep in a seperate pot? Same pot? which hops and how much? what extract and how much? how much water?
Adding late extract? How much extract after steeping grains? Same amount of each? How much during boil and when?

Any info would be help. Thanks and Brew on!

I did a pale ale that turned out very nice doing something similar. I added the bitering hops to the steep. When the steep was done, I added half of my extract. Brought that to a boil. I cut the total boil time from 1hr to 30 minutes and added my late hop additions according to the directions. At the 10 minute mark, I added the rest of the extract (with the flame off, don't want to burn it) and finished per the directions. I'm going to brew this again in the spring.
