No, I agree that's the case today (stretching back to the 1970s and the Cosmo era) but that wouldn't have been common in the 1940s -1950s, and the Schlitz ad was probably in a "general interest" publication like LIFE, LOOK or SAT. EVENING POST rather than the LADIES HOME JOURNAL.

There was some beer advertising aimed at women, often as the buyers (for their husbands) or servers of beer but also as consumers - couples drinking together, etc - [IMG]

Still, I'd say that most of the standard "pretty girl/women" ads then were meant to appeal primarily to men (especially when she's in a bathing suit).

Yeah, I'd say they fall under:
Based the text in the ads:

My mom maintains that this is the case and refuses to ever buy me or my father beer that is in the cooler. There are many outstanding beers that she has seen in her travels that I will never see since I'm stuck in Texas doing graduate school. She won't get them because "they'll go bad if they get warm".

    Oh, mom.

If they are fake, riddle me this.

When I walk into certain retail establishments (those who sell mostly cases rather than bottle shops) why is it I have no difficulty finding advertising wall posters and standing cardboard figures that are all women, mostly showing lots of leg, a large bust, and lots of cleavage, but there are no posters and standing cardboard figures of beefcake men with their six pack abs?

And why is it that as of last year roughly three times as many males as females are likely to be beer drinkers?

Have you explained to her that the beer was cold while in the secondary before bottling, then got warm on the brewery's warehouse floor?

Maybe you shouldn't, she won't buy any beer after that! :grinning:

Ahhh, somehow I missed that the connection was to the WaPo quip. (I also didn't see the twinkle in your eye. )
