I am so happy this format is coming out. I was talking about this in the DFH thread. Bigger beers in smaller formats is perfect! This will let me drink a beer instead of having to drink 1.5 - 2.5 beers in a sitting. Hopefully this will be an 8 pack, but I am thinking it will be a 6 pack.

What are your thoughts on this format?

This is awesome. I don't even know these guys, but I wish some of my locals would start doing this. 8 oz of a nice RIS is perfect.

I haven't either, but this could be huge in the community. I would buy 8 oz cans over 12 oz bottles any day for a bigger beer.

Seems like just another way to charge more and give less.

Definitely a good idea. And back in the old days before having an open container in a car became really, really, illegal, these would have been good to wash down a sub on a road trip.

I don't think so, really. They will probably be around the same price, but they are saving on glass, and splitting up the quantity. 6 - 8 oz. beers will be the same amount of beer as 4 - 12 oz.

Okay, but is it really that difficult to finish 12 oz of a RIS? It's not like you have to worry about it getting hot and flat. Plus I hate canned beer.

might as well have gone to an 8oz can....I get about that much beer or less out of their 12oz bottles after the gushing stops.

It isn't that it would be hard to finish, but if you are having a session with some friends, less is always better, especially if you have to drive home. As for not liking canned beer? That is a personal preference, but if you are pouring it into a glass no real issues. Also, almost all fermenters are typically a big metal can.

If only there were a way to drink less of a larger quantity of beer since you have to drive.......

I kid I kid.. I'm not super into the can, but can see the appeal.

I completely agree with you, but if you are sitting at home wanting a beer before bed, do you want to open that bomber of a 14% stout, or would you open one of your 8 oz cans of said beer?

I only wish that they would have used the Red Bull style cans for this. The reason I think they didn't is because of the mouth opening of the can. The Red Bull one may be too small for beer and cause over foaming. I may be wrong, but just my 2 cents.

I imagine they can use a standard canning line for these as well.

I would think so as well, probably another reason for the stumpy boys. Also, they can use the same can toppers for both.

This 8 oz. "stubby" style of beer can (w/same diameter as the standard 12 oz) was used by numerous brewers starting in the 1950s - Budweiser and Schlitz, among others, were both were available in them, and they were used for many of the best selling malt liquors of the era - Cold 45, Country Club, Schlitz Malt Liquor, Stite, etc, before that style became better known for being packaged in the 40 oz bottle.

Modern kegs and fermenters are made of stainless steel - beer cans are aluminum. Two very different metals.

Beer cans have a water-based polymer lining to prevent beer from coming into direct contact with the aluminum and causing off-flavors from the resulting chemical reaction. Modern cans when filled on a quality canning line can be excellent containers for beer, but not simply because they are made of "metal".

May I suggest this as their motto: 8oz cans...polluting the environment with 1/3 less bpa than a comparable 12oz cans.

Great idea! Sometimes buying anything larger than 12 and north of 8-9% ABV can be daunting, especially if no regular drinking buddy.
