Hi all, I am taking a long ass road trip from New England to Florida next month and we're staying overnight with a friend near Banner Elk, NC. I see good but minimal reviews of Flat Top Brewery there, and the search function on this forum did not turn up much. How is the tasting room and quality of beers, which style do they make best and you would recommend? Do they sell growlers only or bottles out of the brewery (I found they distribute bottles) as well, and what are the growler rules/laws - branded only, any clean container, etc.?

On that same note, this is my only planned stop but I'm open to any other suggestions along our route! We are going down I-81 through western Virginia then north/south along US Rte 321 to Charlotte, I-77 to Columbia, SC then I-26 to I-95 and on to Orlando, FL. We're passing right through Hickory, so no duh there, but what other unique breweries, shops, etc. would you suggest mainly in the western VA/NC/SC leg of my trip? We are traveling through on a schedule so unfortunately our stops will need to be limited.

    Thanks!

I know of Flat Top, but what they specialize in not sure. I have never tried them before..but if your in Banner Elk then you should drop back to AMB in Boone and Lost Provence which makes great pizza.

There are plenty of options toward Charlotte...almost hard to say where to begin.

You probably wanna come see us at Peabody's in Boone while your up here, you are only 15 minutes away from the ultimate big kid candy store in NC...You will be sad, and probably chuckled at if you don't...

In response to your question of Flat Top, they do some very nice stuff..no bottles as of yet but I think that they do pour growlers...they have a small tasting room where you can taste the goodies they have available currently...the imperial chocolate coffee stout is delicious, they also do an IPA, Session IPA, Kolsch and some other summer seasonals as well, pretty good little spot to wet your whistle for sure...come on down into Boone and Swing by Booneshine (their tap room is Basil's Pasta and Deli...awesome food, really good brews!) and AMB (great brews, good pizza) and obviously swing by and see us for all your bottle collecting...Hope to see ya'!

@kevdemers If you have time you might want to stop in Charlottesville on your way down I-81 (go east on 64) and stop by Champion Brewing

I visited Flat Top last summer. Cool spot with good beer. Worth a stop.

It has been a while since we ventured up there, but we ( me + wife and daughter on beer road trip) rated their IPA, pale and Black Rye IPA pretty high when we entered them in untapped.

AMB is very good. I haven't been to Boonshine Brewing yet, but have had their IPA on a guest tap at Old Hickory, and it was great.

If you find yourself near Morganton NC, check out Fonta Flora, some absolute great stuff. Catawba Brewing also in Morganton has a number of good flagship brews, plus some small batch and barrel aged offerings.
