Is it true that must places won't fill flip top growlers because they have to seal them and can't because of the flip top?

Nope, but I can see where it is possible in some states with BS laws.

I live in Ohio and a friend of mine took his flip top growler in to a bottle shop to have it filled and they refused because they could not put a heat shrink type seal over it. Just wondering if this was the norm. I have been looking into getting a growler but didn't want to get one that I couldn't get filled. My friend is a home brewer and used it to transport his own beer. This was the first time he tried using it outside of that.

I hear in PA some brewery (I think Victory) has to seal the top of their growlers with tape so they don't count as unopened containers since PA is harsh on that.

I have a flip top growler I take to bars and get it filled and never seen this happen.

if you're looking in to it, I'd get a screw top or two and a swing top. No foul in having options. I prefer my swing tops for fills I know I won't be opening immediately. I feel as though they preserve freshness a little better, so they're good to have.

Stone brewing in CA only fills flip tops. Depends brewery to brewery.

Here in KY they wrap some electrical tape around the cap which never ceases to amuse me. I guess as long as they can get the tape around the top anything would be good to go (just in case that odd ABC Agent was hanging in the parking lot).

Flip top not an issue but some breweries will only fill their own growlers "for sanitation reasons"

almost all growlers i've come across in IL are screw top, and heat sealed or electical tape sealed, so it's not an 'open container'. also, side note..it's also been my experience that more and more breweries are only filling their own growlers.

I have filled my flip top growlers at Pizza Boy, Selin's Grove, and Spring House without problem. I don't know about Victory but I don't think any such policy is state wide.

I know some places won't fill some growlers because of the size or the way it's filled...Or just the fact that they insist on selling you another growler.

New growlers are usually $5 or less....so if they had something I wanted I would just get a new one or skip the place in general. :astonished:

Hill Farmstead in Vermont does not fill them because they say that type of growler does not fit under their taps.

Next time they give you a lame cop-out like that, bring a zip-tie with you. Problem solved.

???? HF only sells flip top growlers... The only thing they don't fill are 32 oz screw top growlers and stainless steel.

Is that true? I used to get a screw-top SS water-bottle-style growler filled at Stone all the time. But that was a few years ago.
