Today we announced our second location, in Des Moines, Iowa. Also, yesterday we released a kickass APA called Melting Pot. -W [Des Moines, IA, May 13, 2013] Flix Brewhouse™, the world’s only combination first-run cinema and dine-in microbrewery, has been signed as the new entertainment anchor of Merle Hay Mall with a scheduled summer 2014 opening, mall CEO Elizabeth Holland announced today. “We set out to bring something new and different to Des Moines and are thrilled with the addition of Flix Brewhouse to Merle Hay Mall. Flix Brewhouse is both cutting-edge and family-friendly, and will be a destination at our mall whether one is going to the movies or not,” Holland added. The Flix Brewhouse concept was born in Austin, Texas with a goal to be best in class among popular-priced cinema-eatery concepts. The Des Moines Flix Brewhouse will feature eight auditoriums equipped with parabolic screens, state-of-the-industry digital projection, extra wide plush seating, and the newest immersive 3D sound experience. Viewers will experience some of the best available cinema technology while enjoying unobtrusive in-theater service from a complete cooked-to-order menu and a broad selection of soft drinks and adult beverages, including nearly a dozen signature beers brewed on-premises. Des Moines will be the group’s first foray out of Texas and additional Midwest locations are planned. In addition to showing the latest Hollywood blockbusters, Flix Brewhouse has a wide variety of special programs, including a Pro-Am homebrew competition for charity, on-site Beer 101 brewing and tasting seminars and special themed classic film series such as LMAO Dinner Theater, Chicks Flix (ladies night), Macho Mondays and Pancake Pajama Party on Saturday mornings. Food and craft beer pairings and special releases are celebrated by Flix with a range of dining and tasting events, featuring beers from other noted craft breweries as well as from the Brewhouse.
I won't be moving up there, just visiting. I hate seasons...that's why I moved back here from Chicago.
I find it humorous that you do not give Round Rock credit but give Austin credit. I do not blame you. I still need to get up there and drink some of the beer again.
Iowa is beautiful in the summer. Roads are clogged with semis full of hogs and corn (true story). Americana!
We are actively looking at locations across the country. Des Moines certainly meets all of our criteria: right demographics, very active movie watchers, very large craft beer consumers, tremendous location, underserved by entertainment option, etc. It's a pretty long list but Des Moines will be a slam dunk for us! That part of the press release was not written by us, but by the owners of Merle Hay mall. I'd venture a guess that no one in Iowa knows where "Round Rock" is, other than that our triple-A baseball team plays their triple-A baseball team.
Cool. The Alamo Drafthouse under construction in Richardson is the only place that will come close to what Flix offers. I'm with Boots though - just wish we had more options up around DFW. There aren't very many good places to watch a movie, much less one that cares about the beer they serve as well.
So excited for this to open! Des Moines does have a theater that offers adult beverages, but it's an older theater and has a very limited selection. Living in Des Moines, it's not short on things to do(which I'm sure for everyone is surprising), Flix just adds to the mix. I expect it to be highly successful and help turnaround the Merle Hay area. (P.S. I'm from Texas and will be touting this place non-stop)
Man this thread just depressed me quickly. I'd direct comments and questions to Flix's Facebook page. I can tell you that Walt was completely pumped about the location and I'm sure it'll be amazing when it opens. They make some solid brews and I just wish they'd expand to South Austin, as Round Rock is a bitch for me to get to.
This will turn every movie theater into a pub! http://www.hydroflask.com/products/64-oz-wide-mouth-vacuum-insulated-stainless-steel-growler.html
