I love NE IPAs and have never really been bothered by the "haze" which causes so much contention. However, last night I was drinking a well respected NE IPA which I generally love, and when I poured it into a glass the beer looked like a snow globe. Tons of whitish things that looked like tiny cheese curds suspended, which over the course of drinking were settling (although not fast enough for me to avoid them). The beer was less than a month old and tasted and smelled just fine, but I admit the visual was really off putting. Are these floaties just the same thing as the haze but joined into larger particulates? Anyone had this experience and know what they are?

The beer is most likely unfiltered or bottle conditioned. They are most likely yeast particles.

Huh. The beer is unfiltered by I'm pretty sure it's not bottle conditioned. I've drank a lot of unfiltered and bottle conditioned beers in my life and I guess I've just never seen a beer with so many large clumps of white sediment.

Was it Otter Creek Backseat Burner? They had an acknowledged issue with this a while back and posted an explanation (http://ottercreekbrewing.com/beer-haze). Short story is it's nothing to worry about beyond the aesthetic issue.

I've seen this in Captains Daughter quite often. Drinks fine but the thought of sea monkeys floating around is a little different.

I have some Backseat Berners packaged 11/17 (almost a month old! :grimacing:) in my fridge and I can report they are floaty-free. Would also like to note I enjoy this beer more and more each time I drink it.

It was actually Foundation Epiphany. Three of the cans in the four pack were totally normal but one had a ton of sediment. Guess I'll ignore the floaties the next time around, I was just surprised to see them.

I was saying the beer was either unfiltered OR bottle conditioned. Both lead to those harmless little guys,

It's just yeast. I see it all the time on a variety of different brands and styles. Victory Hop Ranch, Sierra Torpedo, NEBCo Gandhi Bot, and so on. Sometimes it is more noticeable then others, and I wonder if that means they were getting to the bottom of the fermentor when those beers were packaged. If the can was agitated prior to pouring that will cause more sediment to appear in the glass. John Kimmich suggested once that if you must pour Heady into a glass, that you should leave the last couple of ounces in the can and drink that straight from the can. Although it may be visually unappealing, yeast is edible.

Funny you say that. I opened a can of Epiphany last night and found the exact same thing. The other cans did not have the sediment.

Drink it right from the can and you'll be good-2-go. To think, I still have 7 cans left from a late September canning run. Wonder what they would look like if in a glass? Screw it... as the others were, the remainder will be consumed from the can. One hell of an IPA!

I know this is an old AF thread, but oddly enough I just googled 'floaties in beer' because I was drinking a Foundation Epiphany and was curious. Not unique to them by any means, but an interesting coincidence anyhow.

Focal Banger is a total snow globe every time I’ve had it. First release of Pseudo Sue cans from the new TG brewery had it too. Both those beers drop are bright but have the floaties. It’s not just yeast I believe it’s yeast / protein / polyphenol clumps when that happens. I’ve also had Trillium beers that were still opaque but had a lot of sediment.

As more people start making hazy IPAs, ive seen more and more cans that have straight up sludge caked on the bottom. Its almost made me start to wonder if the widespread use of the 16oz can is because the bottom 10% of the can is sludgy and gross, and isn't made to be poured. With most of these IPAs if you shake out the can to get the last bit out, your glass is then filled with gunk. Call me crazy, but when I buy a beer, I want all of that beer to be good.

Ive seen this almost across the board, but the biggest offenders for me seem to be the Veil and Other Half. My buddy came back with a big haul from the Veil last month and almost everything I drank had a layer of sludge at the bottom of my glass. Ive had similar experience with OH. Both of these beers also tend to have that sharp, acidity on the finish. Maybe it has something to do with the use of Lupulin powder. For example, I haven't had this issue with Treehouse really.

Try this trick with pretty much any trillium ipa:

Rinse can after use, and let sit.

    Wait one week.

    Shake can.

    Rocks.
