A subtle difference perhaps, but Ithaca's label notch is on the month before (not "by") which they feel the beer should be consumed (well, when it is notched:grimacing: ). Here are the examples of the case and label date from my last case (bought 7/29), so the 3 months here would be July-Aug-Sept.

Can't recall but one assumes beer bottled during the second half of a month would be notched one extra month. The month notching method is imprecise by it's very nature (BBC also still notches, but at least their bottles and cases are also stamped with a Julian bottling date).

I always buy Flower Power by the case, so never pay much attention to the notches but I sure would avoid any 6 packs that had no notch. As quick as FP sells at some retailers, it can also sit around others.

Sure it is, when it is accompanied by the clearly stated shelf life period the "Best by" date is based upon. (Well, yeah, it requires a bit of math, and given the hatred of "Julian/Day of the year" dating, it's clear many BAs don't care for doing math in the beer aisle:wink: ).

Ideally, that would be the way ALL brewers date their beer, with a bottling/best by date AND the brewer's suggested shelf life length.

AB of course gets demerits for creating the "Born On" phrase, so they could trademark it. I'm always shocked at how many of the anti-BMC crowd on BA have adopted the use of the term.:grinning:

Here it is, it was started in the spring- (cavedave, you even posted in it ) :

I haven't really noticed a change, though I haven't been drinking it since the early days. The latest tweak mentioned by SenorHops in that thread seems to have been for the better (i.e. substituting citra for cascades, as well as centennial for the chinooks in the dry hopping), and the November notches I was drinking in Aug/Sep were fantastic.

Ug yeah - Flower Power was my one of my all time favorites, but now it just taste muted and there isn't that lovely bouquet smell to it.

I have found that it does that after about two months. Before that, it's the same thing to me, so I don't buy it one month before the notch.

I have to admit that I too have noticed a difference in flower power lately. it used to be a fragrant bouquet of hoppy goodness. Fruit and honey. Now it is muted. I like that word.

Yeah, but IIRC that thread was the annual rumor, and folks seconding it, that FP has changed. Too bad Chief, who used to be a semi active BA, isn't at Ithaca to shoot down the rumors nowadays like back then.

The ones at my store, today, with no notches had Aug. 19 bottling date on case.
