Normally I drive across from the states with the beer I'm bringing back, but what the best advice if you are flying back? Wrap a few bombers in your towels in your checked baggage and then declare them at the border? I have a work trip next week to Grand Rapids and want to take full advantage of the selection there. Thanks

I jusy flew back from Detroit with a bunch of bottles in my checked bag. This is what I did and it worked great.
    • I used a hard sided rolling suitcase (it actually has a soft top, but plastic everywhere else).
    • I wrapped each bottle in bubble wrap and then placed in a ziplock in case of breakage (the plastic bag was overkill IMHO).
    • Packed each bottle in with clothing so they did not touch each other or come in direct contact with the exterior of the suitcase.
    • Packed the suitcase full enough so there was no movement inside the case.
    • Be sure to weigh your suitcase; check with the airline to see what their weight limits are and how much you will pay if you are over.
I brought back about 10 bottles, mostly 330's but a couple bombers abd had no trouble at the border. I set-up a few IP's while there and and had great success with some really cool BA's. BM me if you want any references. Hope this helps! Bon voyage!

I packed a carry-on size hard case suitcase full of 45lbs of beer on a Westjet flight from Calgary to Vancouver once. Mostly small euro bottles and a few bombers. Bubble wrap and socks. Nothing broke! it was about as tight as possible. Still don't know how it survived...

They make bubble wrap/padded wine bottle diapers if you're interested. Something like $10-15 a 3 pack on Amazon. Probably worth it for fancier beers, and you can re-use until a bottle breaks. One 'diaper' is supposed to absorb a full 750ml bottle, leaving the rest of your suitcase dry in the case of breakage.

Yeah I flew back with a tightly-packed to the brim suitcase on my trip to SF. Bubble wrap and clothes. Nothing broke, but it got help up and didn't make it on my flight. Got it the next day. I assumed security wanted to inspect it, but when I got it, the bag hadn't been unpacked so it might have just been a normal error.

Thanks for the advice. Its kind of funny how we are allowed to bring back 8.5L of beer, but only 1.5L of wine. These days so much beer is just as strong as wine.
