A few weeks ago, Flying Dog released BA gonzo as a brewery exclusive. In fact, they made a really big deal about this: http://flyingdogales.com/faqs-barrel-aged-gonzo-release-monday/ "Will bottles of Barrel-Aged Gonzo be available at my local bottle shop after the release? Nope. And while you’re in reading mode, you might want to check out what the word “exclusive” means." Yet, yesterday I saw bottles sitting on the shelf in a liquor store in Frederick, and they were $4 cheaper than they were selling them at the brewery. Anyone have any info on this? Was the release so poorly attended that they were forced to distribute the bottles?
That might be the case. Because of the snowstorm, FD had planned a second release date. When my dad went out to get mine at the original release he said the snow was likely a major deterrent, as hardly anyone was there.
Were they from the most recent batch? I still see some 750's sitting on shelves every now and then from previous years. I'm surprised they tried to make such a big deal out of the release when BA Gonzo had been distributed for years without any fanfare. It was nice about 2-3 years ago when you could go to the brewery and pickup a 12 oz BA Gonzo for $4.
I had a similar thought, but they appear to be from this year. The guy at the liquor store didn't know much about it, but he said he got them recently with regular distribution.
Which shop if you don't mind me asking? Ye Olde? They usually have the best beer selection in Frederick (and also get one of the biggest allotments of Pappy).
I agree, but the shop I saw them at is near the Wegmans. I think it is called Frederick Wine House, or something like that. Ye olde may also have them.
Not sure about the Frederick shops, but Dawson's still has some from previous years (both 750's and 12 oz bottles).
I went to the release and there was almost no one there. I got there around 2 or 3, and it had started at noon, so maybe it was just a lull? But realistically, they had a lot of BAG left, so it wouldn't surprise me if they ended sending some of it out. I know last year's was a smaller batch than years past because they changed the blend of barrels, but I was surprised that this year's was brewery only. It seemed kind of like an attempt to cash-in on the trend of brewery only releases, but I dig this beer and had to be in Frederick that afternoon anyway.
Cloverleaf tavern in Caldwell NJ quietly had this on tap this weekend. I had a glass of it yesterday before my dinner and thought it was quite nice considering I'm not too big a fan of Flying Dog.
I understood the brewery-only release of the BA Horn Dog because that was quite limited, but brewery-only BA Gonzo (one of their best to be sure, but still), is silly since it was everywhere last year.
Anybody get any of the 3 liters? Is it possible they might still have a few? They made a 100 of 'm. If anybody has any of these big or small I'd appreciate some love on the west coast... Anybody? Thanks!
They definitely still have the 3L bottles, but they're $500 per. I'll be back home in Frederick the weekend of May 10th and have at least 1 extra BA in the 750ml format, but could probably get more. PM me if you want to work out a trade.
