I'm flying into Kansas City on Friday to ride back to Nashville with my daughter. She is driving in from wichita and probably won't pick me up until around 10:30 or 11. So where can I take a shuttle to "cheaply" to hang out or maybe a nice bottle shop. We are going to head out that night, so would be great if could get south since the airport is apparently out of the way. Any ideas where to go and cheapest way to get there?
Flying Saucer or Foundry are good spots to visit, Saucer is downtown and Foundry a little bit south of downtown. Both have other places and bottle shops that are walkable distance away. Not sure about transportation though, I always get a rental car.
I would go to the Foundry then, Gomer's Midtown is just a couple blocks north. Not a great bottle shop, but better than anything close to the Saucer. If you had more time or flexibility, the best bottle shops are Gomer's in Lee's Summit and Lukas Liquor (Martin City location). Both would be quite a hike from Foundry or Saucer.
I was hoping there would be a airport shuttle that might run into town. My daughter mentioned something about Overland Park?
So I can get a shuttle from airport to either Flying Saucer area or Foundry's area for around $18. Btwn the 2 areas, which would be better to blow 2-3 hours? Not sure if I'll make a bottle shop stop in KC...will save that for St. Louis where I'll have a bit more time.
Saucer has way more on tap than Foundry so that is a better choice for quantity. Plus they have flight options, where I think Foundry only does a McCoy's flight.
So I don't sit and get hammered, is the interesting stores etc around there to blow some time or is it safe to walk in the area at night? Also, does Bells distribute in KC? I'm holding out hope I might be able to stumble across some black note.
Yeah... I figured. Still trying to decide if worth checking out the Gomers by the Foundry or just go to Flying Saucer since they might still have Firestone Scuba on tap.
To be honest, I think the Westport area where the Foundry is located is more interesting than the Power and Light area. The Power and Light area is mostly chain restaurants and bars in the downtown area, whereas Westport has more local options, different unique stores around and a little more character in general. You could probably easily spend a couple hours at the Saucer, but if you don't want to get hammered it might be nice to be an area (where I think) there's more to do. Along with the Foundry, Beer Kitchen is right across the street, and I believe they're owned by the same people. They have better food than the Foundry does and a good selection of beers as well, including a lot of local options that you won't find outside of the state. I've also heard good things about Green Room Burgers & Beer, which is very close the Foundry, and there's the Riot Room, which supposedly has a good beer selection and is more of a dive bar/music venue. Those are all within walking distance of each other. Gomer's is a very good store that you should also be able to walk to, though I'm not sure how safe it is to walk there at night. They have a nice selection of bottles and they tend to hold onto things a little longer than other places. Speaking of beer selection, the Foundry just had an event on Tuesday where they poured a bunch of different stouts, including Abyss, BCBS, Black Butte, and Founders Imperial Stout. I heard it was kind of slow, so they might have some of those left...you never know. Anyway, just my two cents, have a nice trip!
Thanks Shebby....the walking at night concerns me a little bit. I'm a big guy, but have no desire to get mugged or anything
You shouldn't have any trouble walking around Westport at night, but the area where Gomer's is located is a little sketchier. Nothing awful by most standards though, and as a big guy, you'd probably be just fine .
