I just picked up 5-22oz a few days ago. When I bought them they were being kept in a fridge. Can I store these at room temp or do I need to keep these cold until I drink them?

You can store them in room temperature & cool them to drink later. That's fine. I've done it many times.

at this point they are at least a year old, i find this beer to beat its peak between 1 and 1.5 years old and it sharply drops off at around 2 be careful holding onto it too long

Resurrecting an old thread here I know, just wondering what 2015 looks like for my favorite beer from Troegs. Will it ever be bottled again? Thanks in advance for any info.

I believe I heard that it was supposed to come back around again. They were supposed to be bottling Barrel Aged Flying Mouflan this fall but I heard that had to dump that batch.

Well that is disappointing! I remember talking with someone there about them barrel aging Flying Mouflan. I often found myself wondering what had happened... and there is my unfortunate answer :slight_frown:

Yeah I wish it wasn't true. I just opened one of my 5/12 bottles and they're drinking great. I was looking forward to opening one with a BA version.

I was told at the same time, this was at the BA Troegenator release, that more BA Troegenator was already in the barrels and would be released around the same time at BA Mouflan. Both of those were supposed to be October/November. At least thats what this guy said. He mentioned the barrel Java Head firkin which came true so he at least knew what he was talking about a little bit.

John also put a picture of barrels on IG 8 weeks ago and said they're filled with Impending Descent. 40 barrels and they're hoping to age for 6 months. 375ml cork and cage.

Yeah I have a bottle from the last run in my cellar. I guess it's time to open it based upon your input! I was waiting for the next batch of BA Troegenator as well. That was supposed to become a seasonal release. I traded away my last bottle from the latest release expecting a new batch to come out. Oops! BA Impending Descent should be awesome. Can't wait for that! Thanks for the info!

That's got to be a recipe change. Not sure what abv the 2012 and 2013 batches were - but my bottles of 2011 are 9.3%

What batch did you have this experience with?

I've been working my way through a case of the spring 2011 batch since then. I just cracked a bottle tonight, and I think it's still going strong. Some nice malt flavors - raisin, dark rum, brown sugar.

This was my hunch as well but I decided to crunch some numbers and wet barrels being the cause isn't all that far fetched. Assuming my math and logic are correct of course. I hope someone will chime in to correct me if I'm wrong. In the US a standard drink is one that contains .6oz of pure alcohol.

12oz of 5% abv beer is a standard drink, meaning that Flying Mouflan at 9.3% abv is 1.86 standard drinks. The BA version is 13.4% abv, or 2.68 standard drinks. A difference of .82 standard drinks.

1.5oz of 40% abv hard liquor is a standard drink. The .82 standard drink gap between the 2 Mouflans would then be bridged by 1.23oz of bourbon per 12 oz bottle.

I don't know how big bourbon barrels are, but if they are 50 gallons, that means some combination of 5.1 gallons of liquid was left in the barrel or leached from the wood. A higher proof bourbon would mean even less liquid is required to account for the jump in abv. That's not entirety implausible is it?

Hopefully @oneraindog can chime in with the real story.

    Hi guys,

first time poster here...a couple people reached out to me directly about this one so I thought I would chime in...

we have been playing around with mouflan for awhile trying to find the best combination of barrel and storage time/temp for the beer. If any was 'dumped' it was a minor part of the splinter experiment, usually we just take a step back and wait to see what developes. I'm really diggn the deep raison and cocoa notes in some of the barrels and the silky vanilla/ date in some of the others. The rise in alcohol was one hell of an angle share! The relative humidity fluctuates according to time of year and in this case caused the 13.4% abv.....this also takes a malt bomb of a beer and rolls it into a whole new mouthfeel and texture.

now the final blend is sitting in a tank waiting for labels..hopefully not for long.

stay tuned for 375mL cork/cage four pack in limited distribution...

    cheers,
    johnt

I am surprised to read that someone thinks mouflan peaks after only a year of aging. I personally enjoy drinking this beer fresh but laying some down to age for a few years to let the hops fade and malt/alcohol integrate really turns this beer into something special. I greatly prefer aged mouflan over fresh and cant wait to try the BA version.

Last year when draft mouflan came out I had some friends come over and we drank through every year of mouflan. Starting with scratch 4 and ending with a 1-liter of the draft 2013 version. Unanimously the standout beer of the lineup was the 2007 scratch version before it was called mouflan followed closely by the 2010 and 2009 versions.

BA Flying Mouflan might be what it takes to finally get me to drive out to Hershey. If the distro is super limited, will we see it in Pittsburgh at all?
