First time volunteering, Friday session. Just read through the orientation paperwork. Any advice from those who have volunteered before?

I volunteered the Saturday day shift last year, and then attended the evening shift after. Long day but an amazing one. Not sure what free shift you are attending given you're working Friday?.....I would assume Saturday night? Regardless, from an advice perspective there really isint much needed. You show up to the forum....line up, head upstairs to check in where you get a shirt and then I believe they assign you a row/shift leader? Unless that's changed. Then you head down to the floor and just help where is needed. Last year I kind of just floated around and helped with ice and keg filling until a few minutes before the shift started then planted myself by what beer I wanted to pour. Happened to be Fremont brew 2000. I would advise to make a mental note of where any "whales" are so you can have a "runner" go get you a pour if you cant breakaway from your station during the working shift. Other then that, it's pretty laxed. You get a break and I imagine some type of pizza food wise....then break down. Then upon return for your Saturday shift you should have a good mental layout and know exactly what you want to hit in terms of beers you may have missed out on Friday. Cheers!

    - Don't over think it
    - Organization is horrible, just going to have to deal with it
    - Actually work

My bf accidentally bought tickets to both the Sat AM and Sat PM sessions. As a newbie, which is better to go to? My concerns are 1. selling the other two, and 2. things not being available in the evening.

Do breweries typically reserve kegs for each of the sessions? Or does the Sat PM risk having a far more limited selection?

Same allocation of each beer by brewer per session. Only difference between Sat night and the other 2 sessions is that there is no VIP hour of power so everything is on right at the start, while some things kick during VIP at the other sessions.

Also, Saturday AM has the winners announced. So those may go faster for the PM session.

I've always done Sat PM because I like to know the winners and I try to grab some of those. And the fact that there's no VIP means that those aren't kicked before/shortly after doors open.

Given the talk here and people posting the brochure, you will still have a pretty good idea of whats available and the standouts for the afternoon session.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will try and sell the early tickets.

I know breweries aren’t supposed to say what they are bring prior to the event, but in years past some have posted what they are brining on Twitter. I haven’t seen any so far. Anyone know of anything that will be there?

Check the Forbidden Root thread and/or their IG account. Can’t remember which one, but @KrajDoesBeer alluded to a couple of their offerings. I think Mikerphone has also mentioned one or some of their entries on social media.

Lots and lots of BA beer!! In all seriousness, I’ve been scouting all avenues as well (without luck), in an effort to plot my path of liver destruction.

So the app won't list beers until "judging is complete." When does that typically happen? As someone with the early Saturday session is the app going to be worthless for me?

They announce the winners during that session so whoooo boy do I hope judging is complete by then.

But in all seriousness I imagine Thursday night they'll post the beers.

Doesn't judging happen prior to Friday? So there wouldn't really be any need to keep the beers secret, right?

So I assume the point is that the judges don't even know which beers will be there and what they might potentially be tasting? That's extra blind.
